Surely Goodness and Love Will Follow

03/19/2026

Sometimes we imagine God’s goodness only shows up in the moments we would have chosen for ourselves. We call it good when the prayer is answered quickly, when the report comes back clean, when the door opens, when the relationship heals, when the provision comes right on time. But David had learned something deeper. God’s goodness is also present in the valley, in the waiting, in the stretching, and even in the moments we would never have written into our story.

“Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Psalm 23:6 NIV

There is something deeply comforting about the word surely. David does not say maybe. He does not say hopefully. He does not say on the good days only. He says, “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life.”

That means the goodness of God is not occasional. His love is not seasonal. His faithfulness is not dependent on whether life feels easy or heavy. David writes these words as someone who knew both green pastures and dark valleys. He knew what it was to be pursued by enemies, misunderstood by people, and tested by hardship. Yet when he looked back over his life, the conclusion was clear: God had been faithful through it all.

I have seen this in real life more than once. There are seasons when you look around and nothing feels settled. Questions are hanging in the air. Emotions are close to the surface. The path ahead does not seem nearly as clear as the path behind. Yet later, when you stop and look back, you can trace the fingerprints of God everywhere. A conversation that strengthened you. A verse that steadied you. A spouse who stood with you. A door that closed and protected you from something you could not yet see. A peace that made no sense except that the Shepherd was near.

That is what David is saying. Goodness and love are not behind us only as memories. They are following us even now as present realities. God is actively pursuing His children with covenant love. He is not reluctantly walking with you. He is not barely tolerating you. He is not waiting for you to get everything perfect before He cares for you fully. His goodness and love are following you today.

And then David lifts our eyes even higher: “and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” This is the ultimate confidence of the believer. Our hope is not just that God will help us through today. Our hope is that we belong to Him forever. The Shepherd who leads us now will also keep us eternally. The One who walks with us through this life has already secured our forever.

So today, take heart. You may not understand every detail of your journey, but you can trust the Shepherd of your soul. His goodness is still at work. His love is still in pursuit. And your future is still secure in Him.

Today, pause and look back over one difficult season and write down where you can now see God’s goodness in it. Thank the Lord for one specific way His love has followed you. Choose to speak this verse out loud when fear tries to tell you that you are alone or forgotten.

Your challenge today is to live with confidence instead of fear. Walk into this day believing that the goodness and love of God are not far off; they are already following you.

Lord, thank You that Your goodness and love follow us all the days of our lives. Thank You for being faithful in the green pastures and in the valleys. Help us trust You when we cannot see the full picture. Remind us that we are never abandoned, never forgotten, and never beyond Your care. Fill our hearts with peace today and anchor us in the hope that we will dwell with You forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
