He Will Wipe Away Every Tear

Some promises in Scripture meet us right where we are today. Others invite us to lift our eyes beyond today and remember where this story is headed. Revelation 21:4 is one of those promises. Whether you’re carrying grief, facing uncertainty, or simply feeling worn out, God reminds us that what we experience now is not what we will experience forever.
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

John didn’t write these words while sitting in comfort. He wrote them while exiled on the island of Patmos because of his faith in Jesus. The churches he loved were facing persecution. Christians were suffering. Some had already given their lives for the gospel. Into that reality, God gave John a glimpse of what was coming.
Notice that God doesn’t pretend tears don’t exist. He doesn’t tell us to ignore our pain or act like everything is fine. Instead, He promises that a day is coming when He Himself will wipe every tear away.
I love the personal nature of that picture. It doesn’t say an angel will do it or that somehow the tears will simply disappear. God does it. The Creator of the universe stoops close enough to comfort His children. That tells me something about His heart. He isn’t distant from our suffering. He sees it. He knows every loss, every disappointment, every unanswered prayer, every funeral, every diagnosis, every lonely night.
Many of us have walked through moments when we wondered if life would ever feel normal again. We carry memories that still hurt. We miss people we love. We wrestle with questions that haven’t been answered. Revelation doesn’t tell us those things are insignificant. It tells us they are temporary.
The promise isn’t that life on earth will always be easy. The promise is that pain doesn’t get the final word.
Because of Jesus, death is defeated. Mourning has an expiration date. Sorrow is not eternal. One day, every broken thing will be made right because the One seated on the throne is making all things new.
That truth doesn’t just give us hope for heaven someday. It gives us strength for today. When you know the ending, you can keep walking through the middle. You can endure another day, forgive another offense, trust God through another uncertainty, because your future is secure in Christ.
If you’re hurting today, don’t lose sight of this promise. The same Savior who walks with you through today’s valley is preparing tomorrow’s victory. The tears you cry today are seen by God, and one day they’ll be gone forever.
Action Steps
* Thank God today for the eternal hope you have through Jesus, even if your current circumstances are difficult.
* Encourage someone who is grieving or discouraged by reminding them that God’s promises are greater than today’s pain.
* Read Revelation 21 this week and spend time reflecting on the future God has prepared for those who belong to Him.
Challenge for the Day
When you feel discouraged today, pause and remind yourself: This is not the end of my story. Jesus is making all things new.
Prayer
Father, thank You for giving us hope that reaches beyond our present circumstances. Thank You that You see every tear and know every burden we carry. Help us live today with confidence in the future You have promised through Jesus Christ. Give us strength to trust You, courage to persevere, and hearts that remain fixed on the day when You will make all things new. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
