One Thing I Ask

01/04/2026

“One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.”
— Psalm 27:4 (NIV)

David’s words come from a place of holy focus. He had many pressures pulling at him, enemies, responsibilities, fears, unfinished battles. Yet in the middle of all that noise, he distills his desire down to one thing. Not safety. Not success. Not even victory. Presence.

There’s something powerful about clarity like that. Most of us live with a long list of prayers: fix this, heal that, change them, provide here. None of those are wrong. But David shows us that beneath all those requests is a deeper longing, to be near God, to remain where His presence reshapes our perspective.

To “dwell in the house of the Lord” is not about a building. It’s about a posture. It’s choosing to live aware of God, not just visit Him when life falls apart. David longs to gaze on the beauty of the Lord, unhurried, attentive, captivated. Beauty slows us down. It holds our attention. When we look at God’s beauty, fear loses its grip and anxiety loosens its hold.

And then there’s that phrase, “to seek him.” Seeking implies intentionality. You don’t accidentally seek God. You rearrange your life to make room for Him. You silence distractions. You come with expectation. Over time, seeking becomes dwelling, and dwelling becomes transformation.

When life feels fragmented and overwhelming, Psalm 27:4 calls us back to simplicity. One thing. One focus. One steady place where our soul can rest.

Action steps:
• Begin today by naming your “one thing.” What are you truly seeking right now?
• Create a daily, undistracted space to be with God, even if it’s brief.
• When anxiety rises, pause and redirect your attention to God’s presence instead of the problem.

Today’s challenge:
Choose presence over productivity. Before doing anything else today, spend a few minutes simply being with the Lord, no agenda, just attention.

Prayer:
Lord, my life feels pulled in many directions, but today I choose the better thing. Teach me to dwell in Your presence and to desire You above all else. Help me slow down, refocus, and gaze upon Your beauty. Let my heart find rest in You, and let my life be shaped by nearness to You. Amen.
