Losing to Live
01/12/2026
“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.”
— Mark 8:35 (NIV)
Jesus speaks words here that run completely against our natural instincts. Everything in us wants to preserve, protect, and promote our own lives. We are taught from an early age to look out for ourselves, to secure our future, to build something that proves our worth. Yet Jesus looks us in the eye and says, If you cling too tightly to your life, you’ll lose it. But if you surrender it to Me, you’ll truly find it.
This isn’t about reckless living or self-hatred. It’s about ownership. Jesus is asking a deep question beneath the surface: Who is really in control of your life? When we insist on writing our own story, guarding our comfort, and chasing recognition, we may appear successful, but spiritually, something slowly withers. We end up busy, driven, and exhausted, yet strangely empty.
Jesus, on the other hand, invites us into a paradox. Losing our life for Him doesn’t mean disappearing; it means being transformed. It means laying down our agenda so we can take up His purpose. Think of the disciples, fishermen, tax collectors, ordinary people. When they left their nets and followed Jesus, they didn’t lose significance; they found it. What they released in obedience, God multiplied in impact.
Every day, we face small versions of this choice. Will I hold onto my pride, or will I choose humility? Will I cling to control, or will I trust God with the outcome? Will I live for comfort, or will I step into obedience even when it costs me something? Each decision is an invitation to lose a little, and in doing so, to live a lot.
Jesus never asks us to give up anything without offering something far greater in return. What we surrender to Him is never wasted. It is reshaped, redeemed, and returned with eternal purpose.
Today, take a moment to honestly ask yourself where you may be holding on too tightly. Is it a dream, a fear, a habit, or a version of life you’ve scripted without God? Release it into His hands. That’s where real life begins.
Action Steps:
• Identify one area where you are trying to stay in control instead of trusting God.
• Practice surrender by praying before making decisions today, big or small.
• Look for one opportunity to serve someone else without seeking recognition.
• Remind yourself that obedience always leads to deeper life, even when it feels costly.
Today’s Challenge:
It is simple but powerful: choose surrender over self-preservation in one intentional way.
Father, we confess that we often want to save our lives on our own terms. Teach us what it means to truly follow You. Help us release control, trust Your ways, and believe that You are good with every part of our lives. Give us the courage to lose what we must so we can gain what only You can give. We place our lives fully in Your hands today. Amen.
