Open Hands, Open Heaven

Have you ever had a season in life when you prayed and the answer seemed immediate, while there have been other times when the silence felt long. In those slower seasons, the temptation is to assume God is not listening. But many times, our thought is that God is absent or He is ignoring us. Rest assured, neither of those are true. It is however that He, our Lord, is forming something in us while we wait.
“For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:8 NIV
Jesus gives us a promise here that is both simple and deeply powerful. He reminds us that God is not distant, irritated, or unwilling to respond to His children. He is not a Father who hides from us. He is a Father who invites us to come near.
Notice the movement in this verse: ask, seek, knock. This is not passive faith. This is persistent faith. Asking means bringing our need before God. Seeking means pursuing Him with intention. Knocking means refusing to walk away when the answer has not yet appeared. Jesus is showing us that real faith is not just wishing something will happen. Real faith keeps leaning toward God.
Prayer is not just about getting what we want. Prayer is also about becoming who God wants us to be.
Think about a child coming to a loving father. A healthy child does not hesitate to ask. He may ask boldly, repeatedly, and honestly. Why? Because relationship gives him confidence. Jesus wants us to approach God that way. Not with arrogance, but with trust. Not with fear, but with expectation.
Sometimes we ask for strength and God gives us a season that teaches endurance. Sometimes we seek direction and God gives us Scripture, wise counsel, and a quiet nudge instead of a loud announcement. Sometimes we knock on a door we want opened, only to discover God is leading us to a different one entirely. But the promise still stands: He responds. He is at work. He does not ignore the cries of His people.
This verse also challenges us not to stop too soon. Some people ask once and quit. Some seek for a day and give up. Some knock lightly and walk away. But Jesus paints a picture of ongoing dependence. Keep asking. Keep seeking. Keep knocking. Heaven is not closed to the believer. God welcomes wholehearted pursuit.
Today, be reminded that your prayers matter. Your seeking matters. Your persistence matters. The God who spoke the world into existence is not too busy to hear your voice. He sees your heart, knows your need, and invites you to keep coming.
Take a few minutes today to ask God specifically for what is on your heart.
Seek Him first, not just His answer, by spending time in His Word and in quiet prayer.
Knock again on the door you may have stopped approaching because of discouragement.
Today’s challenge: Bring one request back to God today that you almost gave up praying about.
Father, thank You that You are a good and faithful Father who hears me when I pray. Thank You that I do not have to beg for Your attention or wonder if You care. Teach me to ask with faith, seek with sincerity, and knock with perseverance. Help me trust Your timing, Your wisdom, and Your heart. Strengthen me not to give up in prayer, but to keep coming to You with confidence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
