The Lifter of My Head

03/28/2026

Words spoken at you or over you are always one of two things; words of life or words of death. More often than not, it’s the words of death we allow to stake a claim to our minds keeping our self esteem and self worth at critically high levels. These are not the words that God intended for you.

“But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.” Psalm 3:3 (NIV)

David wrote these words during a painful and deeply personal season of his life. He was not sitting in comfort when he said this. He was running. He was grieving. He was carrying the heartbreak of betrayal and the weight of opposition. Yet right in the middle of that pressure, David declared who God was.

That matters.

Because it is one thing to say God is good when life is calm. It is another thing to say, “Lord, You are my shield,” when arrows are flying. It is one thing to call God your glory when people are criticizing, abandoning, or misunderstanding you. It is another thing altogether to say, “You are the One who lifts my head,” when everything in you wants to look down in defeat.

There are seasons in life that try to push our heads low.

Disappointment does it. Shame does it. Fear does it. Financial pressure does it. Bad news does it. Harsh words do it. Sometimes the enemy does not even have to knock us all the way down; he just tries to keep us looking down. Down at our failures. Down at our limitations. Down at the problem. Down at what did not work out.

But God is not only our protector. He is our encourager.

He is the One who gently places His hand under the chin of a weary soul and says, “Look up. I am still here. I am still faithful. I am still your shield. I am still writing your story.”

I think about those moments in life when something heavy hits and you can feel it immediately in your posture. Your shoulders drop. Your eyes lower. Your spirit feels pressed down. Maybe it is a phone call you did not want. Maybe it is a diagnosis. Maybe it is a relationship strain. Maybe it is a burden you have carried quietly for a long time. In those moments, God does not stand far off and simply shout instructions. He comes near. He shields. He strengthens. He lifts.

That phrase, “the One who lifts my head,” carries such tenderness. It is a picture of dignity being restored. It is a picture of hope returning. It is a reminder that your story is not defined by the battle you are in. Your story is defined by the God who stands with you in it.

Maybe today you have been walking around with your head low. Not physically perhaps, but spiritually. Emotionally. Internally. You believe in God, but you are tired. You trust Him, but this season has been hard. Then let this verse speak over you today. The Lord is still your shield. He is still your glory. And He is still able to lift your head.

Not because the battle is already over. But because His presence is greater than what is against you.

Today, take a few simple steps:
Pause for a moment and honestly name what has been weighing your heart down.
Thank God specifically for being your shield in seasons you did not think you would make it through.
Lift your eyes in prayer and surrender the burden to Him again.
Walk into the day with confidence, not because everything is easy, but because God is with you.

Your challenge for today is this:
Any time you feel discouraged, stop and whisper, “Lord, You are my shield and the lifter of my head.” Let that become your posture before it becomes your feeling.

Lord, thank You for being my shield when life feels uncertain and heavy. Thank You for protecting me, strengthening me, and reminding me that You are near. When I feel discouraged, lift my head again. When I feel weak, be my glory. When I feel surrounded, help me remember that You surround me first. Teach me to look up with faith, to walk forward with courage, and to rest in Your unfailing presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.
