A Friend Who Stays

07/25/2026

Most relationships are easy when life is going well. It’s not hard to find people who want to celebrate the promotion, enjoy the barbecue, or laugh over a cup of coffee. But adversity has a way of revealing who is really walking beside us. It also reveals the kind of friend we are becoming. Proverbs 17:17 reminds us that God measures friendship differently than our culture often does.

“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”
- Proverbs 17:17

One of the beautiful things about Proverbs is that it packs deep truth into a single sentence. This verse isn’t describing a perfect friend. It’s describing faithful love.

Notice that it says a friend loves at all times. Not just when it’s convenient. Not just when personalities click or circumstances are easy. Genuine friendship is marked by consistency. It celebrates with you when life is good and quietly sits beside you when life falls apart.

Then Solomon adds, “a brother is born for adversity.” In the ancient world, family was expected to stand together in hardship. The picture is someone who doesn’t disappear when the storm comes but moves toward it. God designed relationships so that we wouldn’t have to carry life’s burdens alone.

I think we’ve all experienced both sides of this verse. There have been people who drifted away when life became complicated. Maybe they didn’t know what to say, or perhaps they were simply uncomfortable with suffering. It hurts when that happens.

But we’ve probably also experienced those unexpected people who showed up. They didn’t solve the problem. They couldn’t take away the pain. They simply came, stayed, prayed, listened, and reminded us we weren’t alone. Looking back, we often remember their presence far more than their words.

That’s exactly how Jesus loves us.

When humanity was at its worst, He didn’t keep His distance. He entered our brokenness, carried our sin, and promised, “I am with you always.” His friendship isn’t dependent on our performance. His love doesn’t come and go with our successes and failures. He remains faithful because that’s who He is.

As followers of Christ, we’re called to reflect that same kind of love. The world doesn’t need more casual acquaintances. It needs believers who answer the phone, who pray before they’re asked, who visit the hospital, who sit in uncomfortable silence, who rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.

Faithful friendship isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being present.

Today, ask yourself two questions. Who has been that kind of friend to me? And just as importantly, to whom am I becoming that kind of friend?

Action Steps

* Reach out to someone who has stood beside you during a difficult season and thank them for their faithful friendship.
* Ask God to show you someone who may be walking through adversity right now, then intentionally be present for them this week.
* Thank Jesus for never leaving you, and ask Him to help you reflect His faithful love in your relationships.

Challenge for the Day

Before today ends, encourage one person who may be carrying a heavy burden. Don’t worry about saying the perfect thing. Simply remind them they’re not alone.

Prayer

Father, thank You for being the Friend who never leaves and never gives up on me. Help me love others with that same faithfulness. Teach me to be present in both the celebrations and the struggles of life. May my relationships point people to the steadfast love of Jesus. In His name, Amen.
