The Harvest Is Ready

05/04/2026

There are moments when you look around and realize the need is greater than the number of people willing to step into it. The world isn’t lacking pain. It isn’t lacking confusion. It isn’t lacking people who need hope. What is often lacking are willing workers who see what Jesus sees and respond with compassion.

“Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.’”
- Matthew 9:37–38 NIV

Jesus spoke these words after seeing the crowds. He saw people who were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He didn’t look at them as an interruption. He did not see them as a burden. He saw them as a harvest.

That is important because a harvest means there is potential. A harvest means something has been growing. A harvest means God has already been working before the workers ever arrive.

Sometimes we look at people and only see problems. Jesus looks at people and sees purpose. We may see broken homes, exhausted parents, wandering teenagers, discouraged coworkers, lonely neighbors, or people trapped in addiction, anger, fear, or shame. Jesus sees a field ready for grace.

But then Jesus says something that should stir us: “the workers are few.”

He does not say the harvest is small. He does not say the need is limited. He says the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.

That means the issue is not opportunity. The issue is availability.

Many people are waiting for someone to care, someone to pray, someone to invite, someone to listen, someone to serve, someone to speak the truth in love. And before Jesus tells His disciples to go, He tells them to pray. “Ask the Lord of the harvest…to send out workers.”

Prayer is not an excuse to avoid action. Prayer is often the place where God begins to make us the answer.

It is hard to sincerely pray, “Lord, send workers,” without eventually hearing the Spirit whisper, “What about you?”

The harvest field may not be across the world first. It may be across the street. It may be in your office. It may be at your dinner table. It may be in the classroom, the boardroom, the recovery house, the church nursery, the hospital room, or the grocery store checkout line.

God is still calling workers. Not perfect workers. Willing workers. Compassionate workers. Faithful workers. People who will see the need and say, “Lord, here I am. Use me.”

Look around today with the eyes of Jesus. The harvest is not hidden. It is everywhere.

Ask God to open your eyes to one person who needs encouragement.

Pray specifically for more workers in your church, community, and ministry.

Look for one practical way to serve instead of waiting for someone else to do it.

Invite someone to church, coffee, prayer, or a conversation about faith.

Say yes to the small assignment in front of you.

Today, don’t just pray for workers. Be willing to become one. Ask God to show you one person in His harvest field, and then take one step toward them with love, courage, and compassion.

Lord of the harvest, open my eyes to see people the way Jesus sees them. Forgive me for the times I have seen needs as interruptions instead of opportunities. Raise up workers for Your Kingdom, and let that work begin in me. Give me compassion, courage, and obedience to step into the field You place before me today. Use my words, my hands, my time, and my life to point people to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
