Burden-Bearing Love

07/08/2025

“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”
- Galatians 6:2 (NIV):

Let’s face it, life, can get heavy. Some burdens press so hard that even the strongest feel like they’re about to break. That’s why this simple command from Paul is so profound, “Carry each other’s burdens.” It’s not optional. It’s not “if you feel like it” or “when it’s convenient.” It’s the heartbeat of the Gospel in motion.

We live in a world that teaches we need to be independent and self-sufficient. There are D. I. Y. books on everything, the “self-help” section grows every year. But Paul calls us to something extremely countercultural, interdependence. Not codependence, where we enable each other’s weaknesses, but a holy community where we walk with one another through the valleys.

The “law of Christ” mentioned here isn’t a checklist of religious duties, it’s love in action. Jesus said in John 13:34, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” And how did He love us? Sacrificially, selflessly, completely.

Sometimes carrying a burden means making a meal, helping with bills, offering a listening ear, or simply showing up. Sometimes it means praying faithfully when a friend has lost the words. It may be inconvenient, but it is never insignificant. When we lift each other up, we mirror the character of Christ.

Here are some things you can do to help you on your journey.

Ask God today, “Whose burden can I help carry?”

Send a text, make a call, or stop by someone’s home who is struggling.

Be intentional in prayer, carry someone’s burden spiritually even if you can’t physically.

Practice humility by allowing others to help carry your own burdens.

My challenge for you is this:
Look for someone who’s weighed down and lighten their load, no matter how small the act. In doing so, you are fulfilling the law of Christ. Be the answer to someone’s silent prayer.

Jesus, You carried the heaviest burden, the weight of our sin, on the cross. Teach us to follow Your example. Open our eyes to those around us who are hurting. Help us love not just in word, but in action. Give us the humility to receive help when we need it and the compassion to offer help when others do. May our lives reflect Your love. Amen.
