Towel and Basin Living

05/09/2025

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.”
- John 13:14 (NIV)

In one of the most stunning and humbling moments in the Gospels, Jesus, God in the flesh, wrapped a towel around His waist, knelt down, and washed the dirty feet of His disciples. This act wasn’t a pause in His divinity; it was a perfect picture of it. It wasn’t weakness. It was power under control and love expressed in the most unexpected way.

Foot washing was a job reserved for the lowest servant in the household. It was unpleasant, unnoticed, and unappreciated. And yet, Jesus, knowing that the cross was just hours away, chose to show His disciples one more time what real love and leadership looked like.

He says, “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” This isn’t a call to ceremonial foot washing. It’s a call to live a “towel and basin” life, a life of humility, service, and sacrifice. Jesus wasn’t setting up a moment to be remembered. He was establishing a model to be followed.

This kind of love is gritty. It gets under your nails and costs you comfort. It’s picking up the phone when you’re tired, staying up to talk with a friend who’s hurting, showing kindness to someone who’s hard to love, or forgiving the person who doesn’t deserve it. Washing feet looks different today, but it’s still just as necessary.

And it starts at home. Parents, serve your kids in love. Children, respect and care for your aging parents. Spouses, serve one another not for recognition but because love demands it. In the church and in our community, this verse invites us to stoop low and lift others up.

Here are a few things you can do to help you on your journey.

Ask God to show you one person you can serve today in a quiet, sacrificial way.

Write down one habit of service you can build into your weekly routine.

Reflect on how Jesus has “washed your feet” and what it means for how you treat others.

Serve someone today in a way that may never be noticed, but would absolutely be felt. Do it not for applause, but in obedience to the One who served you first.

Lord Jesus, thank You for humbling Yourself to serve me. Forgive me when I seek to be served instead of serving. Give me eyes to see the needs around me, hands that are willing to get dirty, and a heart that finds joy in obedience. May my life reflect Your love not just in words but in action. In Your name I pray, Amen.
