The Power of Surrender
06/27/2026
There are moments in life when it feels like we’re fighting battles on every front. Temptation seems stronger than usual. Fear whispers louder than faith. Frustration builds, and we wonder why we’re struggling so much. It’s natural to focus on the battle itself, but James reminds us that victory doesn’t begin by fighting harder. It begins by surrendering first.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
- James 4:7 (ESV)
This is one of those verses that many of us can quote from memory, but it’s also one that’s easy to read out of order. We tend to focus on, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” That’s the exciting part. We want to know how to overcome temptation, discouragement, and spiritual attacks.
But James starts somewhere else.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God.”
Submission isn’t a popular word in our culture because it sounds like weakness. Scripture presents it as strength. Submission is choosing to place yourself under God’s authority because you trust that His ways are better than your own. It’s saying, “Lord, You lead, and I’ll follow.”
Notice the order. James doesn’t tell us to resist first and submit later. He tells us to surrender first. That’s because we were never meant to fight spiritual battles in our own strength.
Think about David walking onto the battlefield against Goliath. His confidence wasn’t in his sling or his aim. His confidence was in the God who had already proven faithful. The battle looked impossible to everyone else because they were measuring Goliath against themselves. David measured Goliath against God.
We often do the opposite. We measure our temptation, our anxiety, our addiction, or our circumstances against our own willpower. No wonder we become discouraged. God never intended for us to win those battles alone.
When we submit ourselves to Him each day, something changes. Our priorities begin to align with His. Our hearts become more sensitive to His voice. The Holy Spirit strengthens us to recognize temptation sooner and respond differently. Resisting the devil isn’t about shouting louder or trying harder. It’s about standing firmly on the truth of God’s Word while remaining under His authority.
And James gives us an incredible promise: “He will flee from you.”
Not because we’re so strong, but because the One we belong to is. Satan has no authority over a believer who is walking in obedience to Christ. He may tempt. He may accuse. He may deceive. But he cannot overcome a life that is continually surrendered to the Lord.
Every morning presents us with a choice. Will I run my own life today, or will I place it back into God’s hands? The answer to that question often determines how the rest of the day unfolds.
Surrender isn’t something we do once. It’s something we choose again and again. And the beautiful truth is this: every time we place ourselves under God’s authority, we discover that His strength is more than enough for whatever we face.
Action Steps
* Begin your day by intentionally surrendering your plans, decisions, and concerns to God in prayer.
* When temptation or discouragement comes today, pause before reacting and ask, “Lord, how would You have me respond?”
* Memorize James 4:7 and repeat it whenever you need the reminder that victory begins with surrender.
Challenge for the Day
Before you tackle your schedule today, spend five uninterrupted minutes surrendering every concern, decision, and relationship to God. Then walk through your day trusting His strength instead of your own.
Prayer
Father, thank You for reminding me that I don’t have to fight life’s battles alone. Teach me to surrender my heart to You each day before I try to face anything else. Give me the wisdom to recognize the enemy’s lies, the courage to stand on Your truth, and the confidence that comes from knowing I belong to You. Help me live under Your authority so that my life reflects Your strength instead of my own. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
