Pray Like You Believe God Hears You

08/08/2026

There’s a difference between saying a prayer and actually trusting God with what we prayed about. We can bring something to God in the morning and then spend the rest of the day worrying about it, trying to control it, and running every possible outcome through our minds. Jesus gives us a different picture of prayer, one rooted not in our ability to make something happen, but in our confidence in the God who hears us.

“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
- Mark 11:24 (ESV)

This is one of those verses that can get misunderstood pretty quickly.

Jesus is not handing us a blank check and saying, “Believe hard enough and God will give you whatever you want.” Prayer isn’t a spiritual version of making a wish. Faith isn’t pretending something is going to happen until we somehow force God’s hand.

The focus here isn’t the strength of our belief.

The focus is the One we’re believing.

That becomes clearer when you look at what Jesus had just told His disciples:

Mark 11:22–23 (ESV)
“And Jesus answered them, ‘Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, “Be taken up and thrown into the sea,” and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him.’”

Notice where Jesus starts.

“Have faith in God.”

Not faith in faith.

Not faith in yourself.

Not faith in your ability to pray the perfect prayer.

Faith in God.

That changes everything.

Because sometimes we read Mark 11:24 and start wondering, Do I believe enough? Is my faith strong enough? What if I have doubts? What if I’m doing this wrong?

And suddenly prayer becomes about us instead of Him.

Jesus is teaching His disciples that they can approach God with genuine confidence because of who God is. Prayer begins with surrender, but surrender doesn’t mean we pray timidly. We can ask boldly while still trusting God completely with the answer.

There are probably things you’ve prayed about for a long time.

A relationship that hasn’t changed.

A child or grandchild you desperately want to see walking with Christ.

A financial situation that still doesn’t make sense.

A door you’ve asked God to open.

A healing you’ve prayed for.

A decision where you’ve asked God again and again, “Lord, show me what to do.”

And somewhere along the way, unanswered prayer can wear us down.

We still pray, but maybe we stop expecting much.

Our words say, “God can.”

Our heart quietly says, “But He probably won’t.”

Jesus challenges that kind of defeated praying.

There’s another side to this, though. Faith doesn’t mean telling God how He has to answer.

Sometimes we decide what the answer should look like before we ever pray. We give God the problem, the preferred solution, the timetable, and sometimes even a few helpful suggestions about how He could pull it off.

Then when God doesn’t answer the way we expected, we wonder if He answered at all.

But trusting God means believing that His answer can be better than the answer I had already written for Him.

Sometimes God says yes.

Sometimes He says no.

Sometimes He says wait.

Sometimes He does something we never thought to ask for.

Paul prayed repeatedly for his “thorn in the flesh” to be removed. God didn’t remove it. Instead, God told him:

2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

Paul prayed for deliverance.

God answered with sustaining grace.

Was Paul’s prayer unanswered?

No.

It just wasn’t answered the way Paul originally hoped.

That may be where some of us need to grow in prayer.

Faith isn’t believing God will do exactly what I asked. Faith is believing God can be trusted with what I asked.

There’s a big difference.

Maybe you have a mountain sitting in front of you right now. Something too large for you to fix, change, heal, repair, or control.

Bring it to God.

Ask Him boldly.

Believe that He hears you.

Believe that He is able.

And then leave room for Him to be God.

You don’t have to understand how He will answer before you trust Him. You don’t have to see movement before you believe He is working. And you certainly don’t have to carry tomorrow’s answer today.

Pray.

Trust.

Obey what He shows you to do.

And leave the outcome in His hands.

That’s not weak faith.

That may be one of the strongest expressions of faith we can ever make.

Action Steps

* Name your mountain. Identify the one thing you’ve been worrying about more than praying about, and bring it honestly before God today.
* Ask boldly without demanding the outcome. Tell God what you desire, but also tell Him you trust His wisdom, timing, and answer.
* Stop picking the prayer back up. When worry returns today, remind yourself: I’ve already placed this in God’s hands. I’m going to trust Him with it.

Challenge for the Day

Take one thing you’ve been trying to control and deliberately surrender it to God in prayer. Ask boldly, trust completely, and resist the urge to take it back before the day is over.

Prayer

Father, I believe You hear me. Forgive me for the times I pray and then immediately take the burden back into my own hands. Teach me to ask boldly while trusting You completely. I believe You are able, but even more than that, I believe You are good. Help me trust Your answer, Your timing, and Your wisdom—even when they look different from what I expected. Today I place my mountain in Your hands. In Jesus’ name, amen.
