Close Enough to Hear Your Whisper
06/25/2026
There are moments in life when no one around us can fully understand what we’re carrying. We smile when people are watching, answer, “I’m doing fine,” and keep moving because that’s what we’ve always done. Yet beneath the surface, our hearts can be aching. The beautiful truth of today’s passage is that God is never distant from those moments. He doesn’t wait for us to get everything together before drawing near. He comes close in the middle of the hurt.
“The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
- Psalm 34:18 (ESV)
Brokenhearted people often wonder where God is. If we’re honest, pain can make Him feel silent or far away. But David, who wrote this psalm, wasn’t speaking from theory. He had known fear, betrayal, loneliness, and seasons when his future seemed uncertain. Out of those experiences he discovered something many of us only learn in the valley: God’s presence is often felt most deeply when everything else has been stripped away.
Notice what the verse doesn’t say. It doesn’t promise that the pain disappears immediately. It doesn’t suggest that faith eliminates grief. Instead, it tells us where God chooses to be. He is near. That word matters. God isn’t observing your struggle from a distance. He steps into it. He sits with the grieving widow, the father burdened by worry, the young adult wondering what comes next, the person carrying regret, and the believer who simply feels exhausted.
Sometimes we pray for God to remove the storm, and sometimes He does. Other times He reminds us that His greatest gift isn’t always an immediate rescue—it’s His presence that carries us through until the storm passes. Looking back over life, many of us can see that the moments which stretched our faith the most also became the places where we experienced God’s faithfulness in ways we never would have otherwise.
If your heart feels heavy today, don’t mistake your brokenness for God’s absence. Your pain has not pushed Him away. According to His Word, it has drawn Him near. The Shepherd knows exactly where His hurting sheep are, and He has never lost sight of you.
Action Steps
* Spend a few quiet minutes today honestly telling God what is weighing on your heart instead of trying to hide it.
* Reach out to someone who may be hurting and simply remind them they are not alone.
* Thank God for one way He has carried you through a difficult season in the past, allowing His past faithfulness to strengthen your faith today.
Challenge for the Day
Instead of hiding your hurt, bring it to the Lord. Spend ten uninterrupted minutes in His presence, trusting that He is closer than your feelings may tell you.
Prayer
Father, thank You that You are not only the God of mountaintops but also the God who walks with us through the valleys. Thank You for drawing near when our hearts are broken and our spirits are weary. Help us to rest in Your presence today, trusting that You have not abandoned us. Give us the courage to bring every burden to You and the faith to believe that You are working even when we cannot yet see it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
