The Power of Your Words

07/30/2026

Words seem so small. They leave our mouths in a matter of seconds, yet their impact can last for years. Most of us can still remember something someone said decades ago, either because it lifted us up or because it cut us deeply. God never treats our words as insignificant because He knows they have the power to shape hearts, relationships, and even the direction of a life.

20 From the fruit of a man’s mouth his stomach is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips. 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
- Proverbs 18:20–21 (ESV)

Solomon doesn’t exaggerate when he says that “death and life are in the power of the tongue.” He isn’t suggesting our words have magical power to create reality. He’s pointing to something just as real: our words carry tremendous influence. They can wound or heal, divide or reconcile, discourage or inspire. They reveal what is happening inside our hearts and often determine the direction of our relationships.

Jesus echoed this truth when He said, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34). Our mouths are often the dashboard lights of our souls. If anger, bitterness, gossip, or constant criticism continually spill out, the problem isn’t just our vocabulary. It’s our heart. Changing our speech begins with allowing God to change us from the inside out.

I’ve discovered something over the years in ministry and in marriage. Most people don’t need someone to remind them of every way they’ve fallen short. They already know. What they need is someone willing to speak truth with grace. A well-timed word of encouragement can become the very thing God uses to keep someone from giving up. On the other hand, a careless comment spoken in frustration can leave a scar long after we’ve forgotten we even said it.

That’s why Paul instructed believers, “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up” (Ephesians 4:29). Notice he doesn’t simply tell us what not to say. He tells us what our words should accomplish. They should build people up. They should fit the moment. They should extend grace to those who hear them.

Imagine what would happen if every conversation today passed through one simple filter: Will these words bring life?

That doesn’t mean we avoid hard conversations. Sometimes the most loving thing we can do is speak difficult truth. But there is a world of difference between speaking truth to restore someone and speaking words that simply tear them down. One is motivated by love; the other is often driven by pride, anger, or hurt.

Before you speak today, pause for just a moment. Ask yourself if your words are about to plant seeds of life or seeds of death. Every conversation is an opportunity to reflect the heart of Christ.

Action Steps

* Before responding today, pause for a moment and ask God to guide your words.
* Encourage at least one person with a sincere, specific compliment or affirmation.
* If you’ve wounded someone with your words recently, take the first step toward making it right.

Challenge for the Day

Choose one conversation today and intentionally make it life-giving. Leave that person more encouraged than when you found them.

Prayer

Father, thank You for reminding me that my words matter. Forgive me for the times I’ve spoken too quickly or carelessly. Fill my heart with Your love so that my mouth reflects Your character. Help me to speak truth with grace, encourage the weary, and use my words to build others up rather than tear them down. May every conversation today honor You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
