Eyes Wide Open

There are moments in life when everything feels calm on the surface… but underneath, something is shifting. It’s in those quiet, unguarded moments that we are often the most vulnerable. Scripture reminds us that not every battle is visible, but every battle is real.
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
- 1 Peter 5:8 (NIV)
There’s a reason Peter uses such strong imagery here. A roaring lion isn’t subtle. It’s intentional, focused, and patient. It watches. It waits. And it looks for the one that is distracted, isolated, or unaware.
I remember watching a nature documentary where a herd of animals grazed peacefully. Everything seemed fine, until the camera zoomed out. Just beyond the tall grass, a lion was crouched low, barely moving. It wasn’t chasing the strongest or the fastest. It was watching for the one that drifted just a little too far from the group… the one not paying attention.
That’s the picture Peter is painting.
The enemy doesn’t need to destroy your life all at once. He just needs a moment of distraction. A little compromise. A slow drift. He looks for the cracks, fatigue, discouragement, isolation, pride, and begins there.
That’s why Peter says, “Be alert and of sober mind.”
This isn’t about living in fear, it’s about living with awareness.
Because when you know who your enemy is, you also remember who your defender is.
You are not alone in this. The same chapter goes on to remind us that God Himself restores, confirms, strengthens, and establishes us. The enemy may prowl, but he does not have the final word, God does.
So how do we stay alert?
Not by trying harder… but by staying closer.
Closer to God’s Word.
Closer to His presence.
Closer to His people.
Lions look for isolation, but strength is found in connection.
When you are grounded in truth, covered in prayer, and surrounded by community, you become far less vulnerable to the enemy’s schemes.
Stay aware. Stay anchored. Stay close.
Action Steps
* Start your day with Scripture before distractions begin
* Identify one area where you may be drifting and bring it before God
* Reach out to someone today and stay connected, don’t isolate
* Pray specifically for discernment and spiritual awareness
Challenge for the Day
Pay attention to your thoughts today. When something feels off, pause, pray, and realign with truth instead of ignoring it.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for reminding me to stay alert. Help me to recognize the areas where I’ve become distracted or disconnected. Give me a clear mind and a discerning heart. Protect me from the schemes of the enemy, and draw me closer to You. Surround me with the right people, anchor me in Your truth, and strengthen me to stand firm. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
