The Knock You Don’t Want to Ignore

07/14/2026

We’ve all had that moment when someone knocked on the door unexpectedly. Maybe you looked through the window first. Maybe you stayed quiet and hoped they would leave. A knock always requires a response. You can open the door, ignore it, or walk away from it, but you can’t pretend it never happened. In today’s verse, Jesus paints a picture that is both deeply personal and incredibly powerful. It’s a reminder that He doesn’t force His way into our lives. He invites us into a relationship with Him.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”
- Revelation 3:20 (ESV)

This verse is often used when talking about salvation, and there is certainly an invitation here. But if we step back and look at the surrounding context, the picture becomes even richer.

Jesus is speaking to the church in Laodicea, a church that had become comfortable, self-sufficient, and spiritually indifferent. They believed they had everything they needed, but Jesus tells them they were actually poor, blind, and needy. Then comes one of the most gracious invitations in all of Scripture. Instead of walking away from them, Jesus stands at the door and knocks.

Think about that for a moment. The One who should have been welcomed in was standing outside.

That can happen in our lives too. We don’t necessarily reject Jesus outright. We just get busy. Careers, schedules, hobbies, finances, even ministry itself can slowly fill every room of our hearts until we’ve unintentionally left Him standing outside. We still believe in Him. We still attend church. But fellowship with Him becomes an afterthought instead of the center of our lives.

What I love about this verse is the gentleness of Jesus. He doesn’t kick the door down. He doesn’t shame us into opening it. He knocks. He speaks. Then He waits.

Notice the promise. “I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”

In the first century, sharing a meal wasn’t just about satisfying hunger. It represented friendship, acceptance, and relationship. Jesus isn’t inviting us into a hurried meeting. He’s inviting us to sit with Him, enjoy His presence, and experience the fellowship we were created for.

Maybe today you’ve realized the door has been cracked open just enough to let religion in, but not relationship. Maybe you’ve allowed disappointment, sin, fear, or simply the busyness of life to create distance. The beautiful news is that Jesus hasn’t walked away. He’s still knocking.

The question isn’t whether He’s speaking.

The question is whether we’ll stop long enough to hear His voice and open the door.

Action Steps

* Spend ten uninterrupted minutes today simply sitting with Jesus in prayer before asking Him for anything.
* Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal anything that has slowly taken first place in your heart.
* Read Revelation 3:14-22 to see why Jesus gave this invitation and what He desired for His church.

Challenge for the Day

Before your day ends, intentionally set aside your phone, your to-do list, and every distraction for at least ten minutes. Open God’s Word, talk with Jesus, and simply enjoy being with Him.

Prayer

Father, thank You that You never stop pursuing us. Even when we’ve allowed other things to crowd You out, You continue to knock with love and grace. Forgive me for the times I’ve become distracted or self-sufficient. Today I open the door of my heart again. Come and have Your rightful place in my life. Help me treasure Your presence more than anything this world offers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
