The Presence That Makes the Difference

There are times when what we really need from God isn’t a different circumstance, a clearer answer, or even an easier road. We need the assurance that He is with us. Because when you know God is with you, you can walk into places you never would have chosen and still have peace.
“And he said, ‘My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.’”
- Exodus 33:14 ESV
This verse comes during a difficult conversation between Moses and God.
Israel had sinned badly with the golden calf. God had promised that the people would still go toward the land He had promised them, but Moses understood something that we sometimes forget: the promise of God without the presence of God would never be enough.
In the verses that follow, Moses essentially says, If You’re not going with us, I don’t want to go.
That gets me.
Because I can get pretty focused on where I’m going.
What’s next? What needs to happen? What decision needs to be made? What door needs to open? How is this going to work out?
And sometimes I can spend so much energy asking God to show me the plan that I miss the greater gift God has already given me—Himself.
Moses didn’t have all the details. He didn’t know exactly what every mile ahead would look like. There were still enemies ahead. There would still be problems to solve, people to lead, and decisions to make.
But God gave Moses something better than a detailed itinerary: “My presence will go with you.” Maybe that is what somebody needs to hear this morning.
You may not know what happens next.
You may be waiting on an answer. You may be trying to make a decision and wishing God would just make it obvious. You may be carrying something you never expected to carry.
You may even be tired of asking, “God, what are You doing?”
God doesn’t always answer that question immediately.
But He does promise His presence.
And then He says something interesting: “I will give you rest.” That doesn’t mean Moses was getting a vacation. He still had responsibilities. He still had a nation to lead.
The rest God promised wasn’t the absence of responsibility. It was the assurance that Moses wouldn’t carry that responsibility alone.
There is a big difference between those two things. We tend to think rest comes when everything settles down. When the decision is finally made. When the problem gets resolved. When the test comes back the way we hoped. When the relationship gets better.
When the finances improve. Then I’ll have peace.
But God tells Moses, in essence, “Your rest isn’t waiting for you at the end of this. Your rest is found in My presence while you’re walking through it.”
That changes how we pray.
Instead of only praying, “God, get me out of this,” maybe sometimes our prayer needs to become: “God, make me aware of You in this.”
Instead of, “Lord, show me everything that’s coming,” maybe: “Lord, help me trust You with the next step.”
And instead of asking God to remove every burden, maybe we learn to recognize that we were never supposed to carry those burdens without Him in the first place.
Moses knew something worth learning:
Where you’re going matters far less than Who is going with you.
If God is leading, you don’t need to know every turn in the road.
You just need to stay close enough to follow.
Action Steps
* Before asking God for direction today, spend a few minutes simply acknowledging His presence. No agenda. Just be with Him.
* Identify the one situation you’re trying hardest to control and deliberately place it back into God’s hands.
* When anxiety starts pushing you toward tomorrow, remind yourself: “God is already there, and He is with me here.”
Challenge for the Day
Stop asking God to show you the whole road. Ask Him to make you more aware of His presence on the step you’re taking today.
Prayer
Father, I spend so much time wanting answers that I sometimes forget the greatest promise You’ve given me is Your presence. Forgive me for trying to carry things You never asked me to carry alone. Help me trust You when I can’t see what’s ahead. Go with me today, and teach my heart to find its rest in You. Amen.
