The Lord Goes Before You

There are days when the hardest part isn’t what we’re facing, it’s not knowing what’s coming. We can handle a lot when we have a plan. It’s the unanswered questions, the uncertain outcomes, and the things outside our control that can keep our minds running long after we should be asleep. Deuteronomy 31:8 gives us something better than knowing what comes next. It reminds us who is already there.
“It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
- Deuteronomy 31:8 ESV
Moses spoke these words to Joshua at a pretty significant moment.
Moses had led Israel for forty years, but he wasn’t going with them into the Promised Land. Joshua was about to step into leadership, cross the Jordan, face enemies, make decisions he had never made before, and carry responsibilities he had never carried before.
And Moses didn’t hand Joshua a detailed map explaining exactly how everything was going to work.
He gave him something better.
God is already ahead of you.
I love that picture.
Most of us spend a lot of time asking God to come with us into whatever we’re facing. We pray about the meeting. The diagnosis. The financial decision. The conversation with our child. The opportunity we’re considering. The door that seems to be opening—or the one that suddenly slammed shut.
“God, please be with me.”
There’s certainly nothing wrong with that prayer. But this verse reminds us that we aren’t asking God to catch up with us.
He went first.
Whatever you’re walking into today, God isn’t standing behind you wondering how it’s going to turn out.
He’s already there.
That doesn’t mean everything will happen the way you want it to happen. Joshua was still going to face battles. There would be resistance. There would be difficult days. Trusting God doesn’t mean pretending those things don’t exist.
It means those things don’t get the final word.
And notice something else Moses tells Joshua: “He will be with you.”
God goes before you, but He also walks with you.
That’s an incredible combination.
He’s already in tomorrow while remaining completely present with you today.
We struggle with that because we want information. We want God to explain the plan. We’d like dates, times, outcomes, and preferably some guarantees.
God often gives us something different.
His presence.
Sometimes faith sounds like, “God, I have absolutely no idea how this is going to work out, but I know You’re already there.”
I’ve learned that some of the things we worry about most never happen the way we imagined them anyway. We spend enormous amounts of emotional energy rehearsing conversations that never take place and preparing ourselves for disasters that never arrive.
Meanwhile, God simply asks us to trust Him with the next step.
That’s why Moses finishes with:
“Do not fear or be dismayed.”
He isn’t telling Joshua there’s nothing intimidating ahead.
He’s telling him that fear doesn’t have to control him because God is going ahead of him.
Maybe there’s something ahead of you right now that you wish you could see more clearly.
You don’t have to figure out the entire road today.
Take the next faithful step.
God is already ahead of you.
God is still beside you.
And God has made a promise that should steady our hearts when everything else feels uncertain:
“He will not leave you or forsake you.”
That’s enough to keep walking.
Action Steps
* Name what’s ahead of you. Identify the one situation creating the most uncertainty or fear right now. Be specific about it when you pray.
* Stop trying to live tomorrow today. When your mind starts running through every possible outcome, remind yourself: God is already there. I only need to be faithful with today.
* Take one step. Make the phone call. Have the conversation. Submit the application. Make the decision you know is right. Don’t wait until you can see the entire road before obeying God on the part you can see.
Challenge for the Day
Write down the thing you’re most concerned about happening next and beside it write: “God is already there.” Every time the worry returns today, use those four words to redirect your thoughts toward Him.
Prayer
Father, I don’t know everything that is ahead of me, but You do. Thank You for going before me and still choosing to walk beside me. When fear starts filling in the blanks with worst-case scenarios, remind me that my future is already in Your hands. Give me courage to take the next step and faith to trust You with everything I cannot see. In Jesus’ name, amen.
