Let There Be Light

Some mornings you wake up and everything feels clear. Other mornings, before your feet ever hit the floor, your mind is already crowded. A problem you can’t solve. A decision you haven’t made. Something you’re worried about. Something you wish you could change. Genesis opens with a picture that feels surprisingly familiar: darkness, emptiness, and uncertainty. And then God speaks.
“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”
Genesis 1:3 ESV
This is the first time in Scripture we hear God speak.
And look at what happens.
God speaks. Light appears.
No struggle. No negotiation. No delay. God doesn’t have to figure out how to overcome the darkness. He simply speaks into it.
That tells us something about God before we learn almost anything else about Him: His Word carries authority.
The context makes this even more powerful. Genesis 1:2 tells us the earth was “without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep.” Nothing looked finished. Nothing looked organized. Nothing looked like the beautiful creation God intended.
But God wasn’t intimidated by what it looked like.
I think sometimes we are.
We look at something in our lives that feels messy and assume God must be as overwhelmed by it as we are.
We see the confusion in our family.
God sees what He’s still forming.
We see the closed door.
God sees what He’s protecting us from—or preparing us for.
We see darkness and wonder where God went.
But darkness has never meant God is absent.
In fact, before God ever said, “Let there be light,” Genesis tells us “the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”
God was already there.
That’s worth holding onto today.
Maybe there’s an area of your life where you can’t see what God is doing. You prayed about it, but nothing seems to be changing. You asked for direction, but you’re still waiting. You know God is faithful, but right now you can’t see very far ahead.
Don’t confuse what you cannot see with what God is not doing.
Think about walking through your house in the middle of the night. Everything in the room is still there, the furniture, the doors, the hallway, but without light, you can’t see any of it clearly. Turn on the light and suddenly you see what was there all along.
Sometimes that’s what God does in our lives.
He doesn’t always change everything around us immediately. Sometimes He gives us enough light to see the next step.
And here’s something else I love about this verse.
God didn’t eliminate darkness from existence that day. He brought light into the darkness.
There are situations where our prayer is, “God, get me out of this.”
And sometimes He does.
But sometimes His answer is, “I’m going to meet you in this.”
That’s ultimately what Jesus did.
John describes Jesus by reaching all the way back to the language of Genesis:
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
— John 1:5 ESV
Jesus didn’t wait for the world to clean itself up before He came. The Light stepped directly into our darkness.
And the darkness couldn’t overcome Him.
So whatever looks dark in your life today doesn’t get the final word.
God does.
You may not know how He’s going to work it out. You may not understand why you’re walking through it. You may not even be able to see what comes next.
But you can trust the One who speaks light into darkness.
Sometimes faith isn’t seeing the whole road.
Sometimes faith is simply saying, “God, give me enough light for the next step, and I’ll trust You with everything I still can’t see.”
Action Steps
* Identify the darkness. Name the one situation you’ve been worrying about or trying to figure out on your own.
* Bring God’s Word into it. Find a promise of Scripture that speaks truth into what fear, disappointment, or uncertainty has been telling you.
* Take the step you can see. You don’t need God’s entire plan today. Obey Him with whatever He’s already made clear.
Challenge for the Day
Instead of asking God to show you the entire plan, ask Him to give you enough light for your next step, and then take it.
Prayer
Father, there are places in my life where I can’t see what You’re doing. Help me trust You there. Speak Your truth into my fear, confusion, and uncertainty. Give me enough light to see my next step and enough faith to take it. Thank You that darkness has never been stronger than Your light. In Jesus’ name, amen.
