Wisdom You Can See

We’ve all met people who know a lot. They can quote facts, solve problems, and carry on impressive conversations. But every once in a while, you meet someone whose life speaks even louder than their words. They don’t have to tell you they’re walking with God. You can see it in the way they treat people, handle conflict, and carry themselves. That’s the kind of wisdom James is talking about.
“Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.”

James asks a question that every believer should answer honestly: Who is wise and understanding among you? If we were writing the answer, we might point to someone with years of Bible study, a seminary degree, or the ability to explain difficult passages of Scripture. James points somewhere entirely different.
He points to a person’s life.
Biblical wisdom isn’t measured by what we know. It’s measured by what our lives reveal. Knowledge fills the mind, but wisdom transforms the heart. When God’s wisdom begins shaping us, it becomes visible in the way we speak, the choices we make, and how we respond when life doesn’t go our way.
What stands out to me is James’ phrase, “the meekness of wisdom.” Our world rarely puts those two words together. We often admire the loudest voice, the strongest opinion, or the person who always has to win the argument. Godly wisdom doesn’t have to prove itself. It isn’t insecure. It doesn’t demand attention. It has the quiet confidence that comes from trusting God instead of promoting self.
I’ve noticed over the years that some of the wisest believers I’ve known weren’t the ones who spoke the most. They were the ones who listened well. They were slow to become offended, quick to extend grace, and faithful in the ordinary moments of life. They didn’t make a show of their faith. They simply lived it. Long after I’ve forgotten what they said, I still remember how they loved people.
That’s the challenge James places before us. Wisdom isn’t something we claim; it’s something we demonstrate. Our family sees it. Our coworkers see it. The cashier at the grocery store sees it. The people closest to us know whether our faith is changing us.
So before trying to convince someone that you’re wise, ask a better question: Can people see Christ becoming more evident in the way I live? Because a life marked by humility, kindness, and obedience will always speak louder than impressive words.

* Look for one opportunity today to respond with humility instead of needing to have the last word.

Prayer
Father, thank You for reminding me that wisdom is more than knowledge. Shape my heart so that my life reflects the character of Jesus. Help me to walk in humility, speak with grace, and live in a way that points others to You. May my conduct honor You today in both the big moments and the small ones. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
