His Goodness Never Runs Out

07/11/2026

There are some truths in Scripture that we need to hear over and over again. Not because we’ve forgotten them, but because life has a way of making us question them. Difficult days can make us wonder if God is still good. Disappointments can make us wonder if He still cares. Yet throughout the Bible, one declaration rises above every circumstance like a lighthouse in a storm: God is good, and His steadfast love never ends.

“Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!”
- 1 Chronicles 16:34 (ESV)

To appreciate this verse, it helps to understand where it comes from. David has just brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. The people are celebrating God’s faithfulness, His presence among them, and His promises that have carried them through victories, failures, waiting, and restoration. In response, David gives them a song, not focused on their accomplishments, but on God’s character.

Notice that David doesn’t begin with, “Give thanks because life is easy.” He doesn’t say, “Give thanks because everything worked out.” He points them to something far more dependable.

The Lord is good.

God’s goodness isn’t determined by our circumstances. If it were, our opinion of Him would change every time life did. His goodness is part of who He is. He is good when prayers are answered exactly the way we hoped. He is still good when we’re waiting. He is good in seasons of abundance, and He is good when we’re walking through loss. His character never fluctuates with our circumstances.

Then David adds another beautiful truth: “His steadfast love endures forever.”
The Hebrew word translated steadfast love is hesed. It speaks of God’s faithful, covenant-keeping love—a love that remains even when we don’t deserve it. It isn’t based on our performance. It isn’t earned by good behavior or lost because of one bad day. It is the faithful love of a Father who keeps His promises.

That doesn’t mean life will always make sense. There will be moments when we don’t understand what God is doing. There will be prayers that seem delayed and doors that remain closed longer than we’d like. But His goodness is not measured by whether He gives us everything we ask for. Sometimes His goodness is protecting us from what we cannot yet see. Sometimes His goodness is shaping us into the people He’s calling us to become.

I’ve discovered that gratitude changes perspective. When we intentionally stop and thank God for who He is—not just for what He’s done—we begin to see His fingerprints in places we may have overlooked. We remember prayers He has answered, doors He has opened, strength He has provided, and grace that has carried us farther than we realized.

David’s invitation is still ours today. Before you make your request, before you wrestle with today’s problems, pause long enough to remember His character. The same God who has been faithful throughout history has not changed. His goodness has not diminished. His love has not expired.

And that’s worth giving thanks for every single day.

Action Steps
* Begin today by thanking God for His character before asking Him for anything.
* Write down three specific ways you’ve seen God’s goodness in your life over the past year.
* Encourage someone today by reminding them of God’s faithfulness during a difficult season.

Challenge for the Day

Before you go to bed tonight, spend five uninterrupted minutes thanking God—not only for what He has done, but simply for who He is.

Prayer

Father, thank You that Your goodness never changes and Your steadfast love never comes to an end. When life is confusing, help me anchor my faith in Your unchanging character rather than my changing circumstances. Give me a grateful heart that remembers Your faithfulness and trusts You for whatever lies ahead. Thank You for loving me with a love that never fails. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
