What Is Impossible with Man?

07/07/2026

There are moments in life when we come face-to-face with something we simply cannot fix. A broken relationship. A diagnosis. A wayward child. A habit we’ve tried to overcome for years. We exhaust our ideas, our strength, and our resources, only to discover we’ve reached the end of ourselves. While that can be discouraging, it can also become the very place where God begins to do His greatest work.

26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
- Matthew 19:26 (ESV)

To fully appreciate the meaning of today’s verse, we really need to see the conversation that took place before. Let’s look at verses 23-25.

23 And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”
25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?”

The disciples weren’t asking a casual question. They were stunned. In their minds, if someone who appeared blessed, successful, and respected couldn’t earn God’s favor, who possibly could?

Jesus was leading them to a truth that every one of us has to learn. Salvation has never been something we achieve. It has always been something God accomplishes.

That’s true not only for salvation but for so much of the Christian life.

We spend a lot of energy trying harder. We promise ourselves we’ll do better next time. We’ll be more patient. We’ll forgive. We’ll stop worrying. We’ll trust God more. Those are good desires, but if we’re depending on our own strength, we’ll eventually discover its limits.

Sometimes God allows us to reach the place where we finally admit, “I can’t.”

That’s not a statement of defeat. It’s often the beginning of faith.

I’ve learned that some of the greatest prayers are the shortest ones. “Lord, I don’t know what to do.” “God, I need Your help.” “Father, I can’t carry this anymore.”

Those prayers don’t reveal weakness; they reveal dependence. And God has always responded to hearts that know they need Him.

The Christian life was never designed to be lived by human determination alone. Every day is an invitation to rely on the One who can do what we cannot. He changes hearts. He restores marriages. He breaks addictions. He gives peace that doesn’t make sense. He forgives sinners and makes them new.

If you’re staring at something today that feels impossible, don’t measure it against your ability. Measure it against God’s.

Your impossibility has never intimidated Him.

Action Steps

* Identify one area where you’ve been relying on your own strength instead of God’s.
* Spend a few quiet minutes today honestly asking the Lord to do what you cannot do.
* Thank God in advance that His power is greater than your limitations.

Challenge for the Day

Instead of saying, “I can’t,” add four more words: “but God is able.” Repeat that truth throughout the day whenever you face something that feels impossible.

Prayer

Father, thank You for reminding me that my hope isn’t found in my own ability but in Your power. Forgive me for the times I’ve tried to carry burdens You never asked me to carry alone. Teach me to trust You more deeply and to believe that what seems impossible to me is never beyond Your reach. Help me walk in faith today, knowing You are still the God of the impossible. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
