When You Help the Hurting, God Takes Notice
07/06/2026
There are moments when someone else’s need interrupts our plans. A phone call. A family asking for help. A stranger standing on a street corner. Sometimes we wonder if what we have to offer will really make any difference. Proverbs reminds us that God sees every act of compassion, and He never overlooks a heart that reflects His own.
“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed.”
- Proverbs 19:17 (ESV)
One of the remarkable things about this verse is that it doesn’t merely encourage generosity—it reveals how God views it. Solomon says that when we care for those in need, it is as though we are lending to the Lord Himself. Think about that for a moment. The person receiving the gift may never be able to repay you, but God says, “I’ll take care of that.”
That changes our motivation.
If we’re honest, there are times we hesitate to help because we wonder if our generosity will be appreciated or even used wisely. We’ve all experienced disappointment after trying to help someone. While wisdom should always guide our giving, this verse reminds us that our obedience is ultimately between us and God. We aren’t simply investing in a person—we’re honoring the One who created them.
Throughout Scripture, God’s heart consistently leans toward the poor, the forgotten, the widow, the orphan, and the stranger. Jesus didn’t just preach compassion; He lived it. He noticed people others walked past. He touched those others avoided. He fed the hungry, healed the broken, and welcomed those society pushed aside. As His followers, our lives should naturally reflect that same compassion.
Generosity isn’t measured by the size of the gift. It’s measured by the condition of the heart. Sometimes generosity is writing a check. Sometimes it’s buying someone lunch. Sometimes it’s giving your time, listening without rushing, or encouraging someone who feels invisible. The amount isn’t what impresses God. A willing heart is.
I’ve also learned that generosity changes the giver. Every time we loosen our grip on what we have, we’re reminded that everything we possess came from God in the first place. We stop living with clenched fists and begin living with open hands. That’s where joy is found.
You may never see all the fruit that comes from a single act of kindness this side of heaven. But God does. He keeps perfect records. He notices what others overlook. And He promises that no act of genuine compassion is ever wasted.
Today, ask the Lord to help you see people through His eyes. There may be someone crossing your path who doesn’t simply need your resources—they need to know someone cares.
Action Steps
* Ask God to make you aware of someone you can bless today.
* Give generously with wisdom, expecting nothing in return.
* Remember that every act of compassion is an opportunity to reflect the heart of Christ.
Challenge for the Day
Intentionally bless one person today with your time, encouragement, or resources, and do it without expecting anything in return.
Prayer
Father, thank You for Your incredible generosity toward me. Help me never become so focused on my own life that I overlook the needs of others. Give me a compassionate heart, wise discernment, and willing hands. May my generosity always point people to You and reflect the love You’ve shown me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
