The Life Worth Losing
07/05/2026
There is something inside all of us that wants to hold on tightly. We want security, control, comfort, and certainty. We naturally protect what we think belongs to us. Yet Jesus has a way of turning our thinking upside down. The things we cling to the most often become the very things that keep us from experiencing the life He has planned for us.
“For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.”
- Luke 9:24 (ESV)
Jesus spoke these words immediately after telling His disciples that following Him would require denying themselves, taking up their cross daily, and following Him. This wasn’t a motivational speech designed to gather a crowd. It was an invitation to wholehearted surrender.
Our culture teaches us to protect ourselves at all costs. Build your own kingdom. Chase your own dreams. Make sure your needs come first. Jesus offers something completely different. He says the path to real life isn’t found by gripping tighter, it’s found by opening your hands.
I’ve watched people spend years chasing careers, possessions, status, or even comfort, believing that once they finally arrived they would feel fulfilled. Some do arrive…only to discover the destination wasn’t what they expected. Success without Christ still leaves an empty place only He can fill.
On the other hand, I’ve also watched people sacrifice their time to serve others, forgive when it would have been easier to hold a grudge, give generously when it didn’t make financial sense, or answer God’s call when it meant walking away from something familiar. From the outside, it looked like they were giving up everything. In reality, they found joy, peace, and purpose that money, recognition, or comfort could never provide.
Jesus isn’t asking us to throw our lives away. He’s asking us to trust Him enough to place our lives in His hands. There is a big difference. Surrender isn’t losing, it is exchanging something temporary for something eternal.
Every day we make small decisions about who will be in control. Will I live for myself today, or will I live for Christ? Those choices shape who we become. The beautiful promise of Jesus is that when we lose our lives for His sake, we don’t end up with less, we discover the life we were created to live.
Action Steps
* Ask God to reveal one area of your life that you’re still trying to control instead of surrendering to Him.
* Choose one practical way to put someone else’s needs ahead of your own today.
* Spend a few quiet moments thanking Jesus for giving His life so you could truly live.
Challenge for the Day
Identify one area where you’ve been holding on tightly. Before today ends, intentionally place it in God’s hands and choose obedience over control.
Prayer
Father, thank You for reminding me that real life is found in following You. Help me loosen my grip on the things I cannot keep and trust You with every part of my life. Give me the courage to surrender daily, knowing that Your plans are always better than my own. May my life point others to Jesus. In His name, Amen.
