Living Sacrifices

04/30/2025

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.”
- Romans 12:1 (NIV)

When we think of the word sacrifice, we often think of something costly, something painful, something we give up. In the Old Testament, sacrifice meant placing an animal on the altar to be offered to God. But Paul calls us to a different kind of offering, not one of death, but of life.

He says, “Offer your bodies as a living sacrifice.” That means our very lives, our time, energy, choices, and actions, are to be placed on God’s altar daily. Not just what we do on Sunday, but what we do on Monday morning at work, in the carpool line, at the grocery store, or in front of our screens. Every moment becomes an opportunity to live in a way that honors God.

Why? Because of God’s mercy. Paul starts this verse with “Therefore,” which points us back to the first eleven chapters of Romans where he explains the depth of our sin and the even greater depth of God’s grace. We didn’t deserve it. We couldn’t earn it. But He gave it freely.

That kind of love compels us to respond. Not out of guilt. Not out of religious duty. But out of gratitude. When we grasp what Jesus has done, how He gave everything for us, the only proper response is to give everything back to Him.

There’s a story about a young boy who went to church with his mother. As the offering plate passed down the pew, the boy looked inside his empty pockets. He had no money. So, when the plate came to him, he placed it on the floor, stepped inside it, and said, “I give myself.” That’s the heart of Romans 12:1.

Here are some things you can do to help along your journey.

Start your day with a simple prayer: “Lord, today I give myself to You.”

Choose one area of your life, your work, your relationships, or your habits, and ask, “Is this pleasing to God?”

Do something sacrificial for someone else today, not for applause, but as worship.

What would it look like if you truly placed your entire life on God’s altar? What would you stop doing? What would you start doing? Choose one concrete way to live out your worship today, not in a sanctuary, but in your everyday life.

Father, thank You for Your mercy that saved me and changed me. I offer myself to You, not just my words or my Sundays, but all of me. Help me live today as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to You. Teach me what it means to worship You not just with music, but with every choice I make. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
