Extending Mercy to the Doubtful

“Be merciful to those who doubt.” — Jude 1:22 (NIV)
Doubt can feel like an enemy of faith, yet Scripture reminds us that it is often a bridge to deeper trust in God. In the short but powerful letter of Jude, we are given a charge that is both simple and profound: “Be merciful to those who doubt.” This verse challenges us to respond to doubt, not with judgment, frustration, or dismissal, but with mercy.
There are many reasons people struggle with doubt. Some wrestle with intellectual questions, struggling to reconcile faith with the complexities of life. Others are weighed down by suffering, wondering where God is in their pain. Even the strongest believers have moments when uncertainty creeps in, shaking their confidence.
Jesus Himself displayed great mercy to doubters. When Thomas struggled to believe in the resurrection, Jesus did not rebuke him. Instead, He invited Thomas to touch His wounds, offering both proof and grace. When John the Baptist, imprisoned and likely discouraged, sent messengers to ask if Jesus was truly the Messiah, Jesus responded not with anger, but with reassurance. If the Son of God showed mercy to the questioning heart, how much more should we?
Here are a few ways we can apply this to our daily lives.
Respond with Compassion Instead of seeing doubt as a weakness to be scolded, see it as an opportunity to encourage. A kind word, a listening ear, or a shared testimony can help someone struggling in their faith.
Pray for Those Who Doubt
Intercede for them, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal truth and bring peace to their hearts. Sometimes, a breakthrough begins with prayer.
Be Patient
Growth in faith takes time. Instead of expecting immediate clarity, walk alongside the doubter as they seek answers. Your presence may be a testimony in itself.
Share the Word
Gently guide them to Scripture, where they can encounter the character of God. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
Mercy is a gift we have received from God, and it is a gift we are called to extend to others. Today, if you encounter someone wrestling with doubt, be a reflection of Christ’s patience and love. Your kindness could be the very thing that strengthens their faith and draws them closer to Him.
Father, thank You for Your mercy, which covers my own moments of doubt. Help me to extend that same mercy to others. Give me wisdom to speak words of encouragement, patience to walk with those who struggle, and faith to believe that You are working in their hearts. Use me as a vessel of Your love and truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
