Rest = Trust
6/23/224
Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.
- Hebrews 4:11 (NIV)
Hebrews 4:11 calls us to diligently pursue the rest that God promises. This verse serves as a poignant reminder of both a gift and a responsibility. The rest mentioned here is more than physical rest—it's a deep, spiritual rest found in the assurance of salvation and the peace of God. It is the rest that comes from ceasing our own efforts to earn salvation and trusting fully in the completed work of Christ. Surrendering our worries, fears, and anxieties to God. It is a rest that comes from trusting in God's promises and knowing that He is in control of all things.
The author of Hebrews urges us to "make every effort" to enter this rest. This might seem paradoxical—how can rest require effort? The key lies in understanding that this effort is not about works or earning God's favor. Instead, it is about striving against unbelief and disobedience, as exemplified by the Israelites. They grumbled, complained, and doubted God's provision, which ultimately led to their destruction. We are called to learn from their mistakes and instead choose to trust in God and obey His commands.
Here are a few things to help you learn to find rest by trusting Him more.
Examine Your Faith:
Take time today to reflect on your faith. Are there areas where you struggle to trust God fully? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any unbelief or disobedience in your life that might be hindering you from experiencing God's rest.
Trust in God's Promises:
Remind yourself of God's promises and His faithfulness. Meditate on scriptures that reinforce God's commitment to you and His ability to fulfill His promises.
Obedience:
Consider areas of your life where God is calling you to obedience. Obedience is not about perfection but about a heart inclined towards God's will. Seek to align your actions with God's Word.
Spiritual Practices:
Engage in spiritual disciplines like prayer, Bible study, and worship. These practices can help you draw closer to God and deepen your trust in Him.
True rest is found not in the absence of work, but in the presence of faith and trust in God's promises. Make every effort to enter into this divine rest today.
Let us make a conscious effort to enter into God's rest by surrendering our worries and fears to Him. Let us trust in His promises and seek His guidance in all that we do. And let us strive to obey His commands, knowing that in doing so, we will find true rest for our souls.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of Your rest. Help me to trust in You fully and to cease striving in my own strength. Reveal any areas of unbelief or disobedience in my heart, and guide me towards Your will. May I find peace and assurance in Your presence, resting in the completed work of Jesus. Strengthen my faith and help me to walk in obedience to Your Word. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
