A Rest That Remains
09/27/2025
“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God.”
— Hebrews 4:9 (NIV)
The longing for rest is something every soul knows. From the beginning of creation, God built rest into the very rhythm of life. On the seventh day, He rested, not because He was tired, but to set a pattern for His people. Yet, when the writer of Hebrews speaks of “a Sabbath-rest,” he is pointing to something beyond a weekly pause. He’s pointing to the eternal rest and peace found in Jesus Christ.
The Israelites who left Egypt longed for the Promised Land, but many of them never entered it because of unbelief. They missed the rest God had prepared because they hardened their hearts. That warning still echoes today. We live in a world where stress, striving, and restlessness are constant companions. We chase after accomplishments, approval, and possessions, hoping they’ll satisfy us, but they never do. The Sabbath, rest we truly need is not a place we go, but a Person we trust.
Jesus said in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” This is the rest of forgiveness, of being freed from the weight of sin. It is the rest of knowing you don’t have to earn God’s love, because it has already been poured out on you in Christ. It is the rest of knowing your future is secure, no matter what your present looks like.
Think of a child who falls asleep in their parent’s arms. They don’t worry about bills, safety, or tomorrow’s plans. They simply rest in the strength of someone who loves them. That is the picture God paints for us. We are called to climb into His arms and trust Him with everything.
This rest is not just for eternity in heaven, it begins now. Every time you stop striving and start trusting, every time you lay down fear and pick up faith, every time you remind yourself that God is in control, you step into the Sabbath-rest that still remains.
Action steps to help on your journey:
Read Matthew 11:28–30 slowly today and let Jesus’ invitation to rest sink deeply into your heart.
Set aside a distraction-free time (phone off, TV off) and practice resting in God’s presence through prayer or worship.
Identify one burden you are carrying right now and intentionally give it to God, refusing to take it back.
End your day by thanking Him that your salvation, identity, and future are already secure in Christ.
Today’s Challenge:
Before the day ends, choose one moment to stop everything and simply say: “Lord, I rest in You, because You are enough.”
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the rest that is found in Jesus. Forgive me for the ways I keep striving and trying to control things on my own. Teach me to trust You more deeply, to lay down my burdens, and to live from the peace that only You provide. Help me enter into the rest that remains for Your people, both now and forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
