Faith Comes Alive
12/15/2025
“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”
Romans 10:17 (NIV)
Faith doesn’t usually arrive all at once. It grows. It develops. It strengthens over time as we are exposed again and again to the truth of who Jesus is. Paul reminds us that faith has a source, and that source is not wishful thinking, positive vibes, or personal resolve. Faith comes from hearing the message, the good news about Christ.
Think about how familiarity works in everyday life. The more you hear a person’s voice, the easier it is to recognize it. A parent can pick out their child’s voice in a crowded room. A spouse can recognize the sound of the other’s footsteps down the hall. Familiarity breeds recognition. In the same way, the more we hear the Word of God, the more attuned we become to His voice. Faith grows as Christ’s truth becomes familiar to our hearts.
This verse also reminds us that faith is not sustained in isolation. Hearing implies proclamation. Someone speaks. Someone listens. The gospel is meant to be shared, spoken, read aloud, taught, preached, and passed on. When the Word of Christ is spoken, whether from a pulpit, a living room, a hospital bed, or a whispered prayer, faith is stirred. Even when our faith feels weak, God’s Word is strong enough to rebuild it.
There are seasons when doubts creep in, when circumstances shout louder than truth. In those moments, what we hear matters deeply. If all we hear is fear, negativity, or the noise of the world, faith begins to shrink. But when we intentionally place ourselves under the sound of God’s Word, faith finds room to breathe again. God uses His Word to remind us who He is, what He has done, and what He has promised.
Faith is not something you have to manufacture. It is something God grows in you as you stay close to His Word.
Pause today and consider what voices you are allowing to shape your faith. Then gently but intentionally turn your ear toward Christ. His Word still speaks, and faith still comes.
Action steps:
• Read Scripture out loud today, even if it’s just a few verses.
• Replace background noise (news, talk radio, scrolling) with worship or Scripture.
• Share a verse with someone who may need encouragement.
• Write Romans 10:17 somewhere visible as a reminder of where faith begins.
Challenge for today:
Be intentional about what you hear. Choose one moment today to silence distractions and listen for God through His Word.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You that faith does not depend on my strength but on Your truth. Help me to hunger for Your Word and to listen closely to the message about Christ. Where my faith feels small, grow it through Your voice. Tune my heart to hear You clearly and to trust You deeply. Amen.
