The Nearness of God to the Broken
12/06/2025
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
There is a holy tenderness in this verse, a reminder that God does some of His deepest work in the places where our hearts feel the most fragile. David wrote these words during a season of fear and uncertainty, hiding for his life and unsure of what tomorrow would bring. Yet in that dark valley, he discovered something profound: God doesn’t stand at a distance from pain. He draws near to it.
If you’ve ever held something broken in your hands, a cracked cup, a shattered ornament, a torn photograph, you know the instinct is to lean in, not pull away. You examine it carefully, gently, looking for how to restore it. That is how God looks at you in your broken moments. He doesn’t recoil. He doesn’t sigh in disappointment. He leans in with compassion.
Scripture repeatedly affirms this truth:
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)
Jesus Himself proclaimed, “He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted…” (Isaiah 61:1)
What feels like the end of your strength is often the beginning of His rescue. Brokenness is not the evidence that God has abandoned you; it is the place where He meets you most personally, most powerfully, and most lovingly.
God’s nearness is not a concept, it is a promise. And for the crushed in spirit, that nearness becomes a lifeline. He comes not only to comfort but to save, to lift, to restore, to breathe hope back into places where hope felt finished.
Quick Action Steps:
• Take five honest minutes today to tell God exactly where your heart feels bruised or burdened.
• Read Psalm 34 slowly, noticing how God responds to people in distress.
• Reach out to one person who may be quietly hurting and speak life into them.
Challenge for the Day:
Look for one moment today when you sense God drawing near, through a word, a person, a quiet pause and acknowledge it as His care for you.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for being close when my heart feels fragile and my strength feels gone. Thank You that You don’t avoid my brokenness but instead move toward it with compassion and healing. Draw near to me today in ways I can feel, and restore what has been crushed within me. Help me also bring Your nearness to someone else who needs it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
