The Good in All Things

06/15/2025

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
- Romans 8:28 (NIV)

This is one of the most quoted and beloved verses in all of Scripture, and for good reason. Today’s verse from Romans is a promise we often reach for when life doesn’t make sense. When tragedy strikes, when doors slam shut, or when prayers seem unanswered, this verse becomes a lifeline.

But let’s pause and really look at what it says. “In all things…” Not just in the victories, not just in the joyful milestones, not just in the blessings we easily recognize, but in all things. That includes the heartbreaks, the disappointments, the detours, and the delays. God doesn’t promise that all things are good, but that He will work them for good.

Take Joseph in the Old Testament as a vivid example. Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and forgotten in prison, none of that was “good” in itself. But God wove it all into a beautiful story of redemption and rescue. Joseph eventually told his brothers, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good…” (Genesis 50:20). That’s Romans 8:28 in action.

This verse also reminds us of our calling, “for those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” That means this promise is deeply personal. It’s for those who are walking with God, even if their steps are limping, even if their faith feels small. If you are clinging to Christ, this promise is for you.

So if you’re standing in the middle of something hard today, trust that God is not wasting it. He’s working in the silence, in the storm, in the season of waiting. Like a master weaver, He is threading every part of your story into a greater tapestry of purpose, one that you may not fully see until eternity, but that you can trust in the here and now.

Here are some things you can do today to help you on your journey.

Write down one area of your life where you’re struggling to see God’s hand at work. Pray specifically over that area, asking God to help you trust His plan.

Read Genesis 37–50 to revisit the story of Joseph and reflect on how God worked good through suffering.

Share Romans 8:28 with someone going through a difficult time. Encourage them with the truth of this promise.

My challenge for you is this:
When you encounter a frustration or setback today, pause and say out loud, “God is working this for my good.” Let that truth settle in your heart before you react.

Father, thank You for the promise that You work all things together for the good of those who love You. Help me to trust You when life feels uncertain and messy. Remind me that even when I can’t see the outcome, You are still good, and You are still working. Align my heart with Your purpose, and give me peace as I walk in faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
