Humbled Under God’s Mighty Hand

06/22/2025

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.”
- 1 Peter 5:6 (NIV)

There’s something powerful about the quiet strength of humility. In a world that often shouts for attention, rewards pride, and praises self-promotion, Peter offers a countercultural command: Humble yourselves. And not just before anyone, but under God’s mighty hand.

This verse was written to early believers who were facing suffering and persecution. Peter, a man who once argued about being the greatest among the disciples, now urges others to do what he had to painfully learn to surrender to God’s timing and strength rather than his own.

Imagine a seed planted deep in the soil. It is buried, surrounded by darkness. But over time, as it remains hidden and still, it is transformed. Roots stretch deep. A sprout pushes upward. And in due time, it breaks the surface into the light, lifted up into life. That’s the picture Peter paints, God will lift us up, but the path to that rising begins in surrender.

The saying goes, “Humility isn’t about thinking less of ourselves, it’s about thinking of ourselves less.” It’s acknowledging that God is God and we are not. It’s choosing obedience over control, service over spotlight, and trust over anxiety. And when we do, God’s mighty hand, strong enough to part seas, form galaxies, and hold the cross, becomes our covering and our security.

You may be in a season where you’re waiting on God. You may feel overlooked, underappreciated, or burdened. But in due time, He will lift you up. Not a moment too soon, and never too late. His timing is perfect because His love is perfect.

Here are some things you can do to help you in your journey.

Start the day with a prayer of surrender, asking God to lead instead of trying to control the outcomes.

Practice humility today: let someone else go first, serve without being noticed, or affirm someone without needing affirmation in return.

Journal a time when God’s timing proved better than your own. Let it remind you He’s still at work.

My challenge for you is this:
Pause and let go of one area you’re trying to control. Say aloud, “God, I humble myself under Your mighty hand. I trust Your timing.”

Father, thank You for Your mighty hand that both covers and lifts. Forgive me for the times I’ve tried to take control, prove my worth, or run ahead of You. Teach me to walk humbly with You, to trust Your timing, and to rest in Your strength. In every quiet moment and every unnoticed act of obedience, shape me to reflect the heart of Jesus. I believe that in due time, You will lift me according to Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
