Faith That Moves Mountains

“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
– Mark 9:23 (NIV)
When Jesus spoke these words, it was in response to a desperate father who had brought his demon-possessed son to the disciples, only to find that they could not heal him. With tears in his eyes, the father pleaded, “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” Jesus immediately picked up on those two little words, “if you can.” They revealed doubt, weariness, and uncertainty.
We often find ourselves in the same place. Life’s disappointments can make us question if God is truly able or willing to step in. Maybe you’ve prayed for healing that hasn’t come yet, for financial provision that feels delayed, or for a child who seems far from God. The weight of waiting can make “if you can” slip from our lips too.
But Jesus redirects the man’s focus from his own weakness to God’s unlimited power: “Everything is possible for one who believes.” He is not promising a blank check for every wish, but He is inviting us into a relationship of faith where God’s purposes are not limited by human impossibility. Faith opens the door to God’s intervention, even in places where hope feels dead.
Think of a small child who jumps into their father’s arms, not because they calculated the physics of it, but because they trust their father’s love. That’s the posture Jesus calls us to: bold, childlike belief that God can do what we cannot.
Action steps to help on your journey:
Replace the words “if you can” with “I believe You can” in your prayers this week.
Write down one area of your life that feels impossible and begin to declare God’s promises over it daily.
Share a testimony of God’s faithfulness with someone else to encourage their faith.
Today’s Challenge:
Catch yourself anytime you pray “if.” Turn it into faith by saying, “Lord, I know You are able.”
Prayer:
Lord, forgive me when doubt creeps into my heart. Help me to move from “if You can” to “I know You can.” Strengthen my faith so I can trust You in the impossible places of my life. Let my belief be bigger than my fear. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
