A Life Worth Finishing

06/20/2025

“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.”
— Acts 20:24 (NIV)

As Paul spoke these words to the Ephesian elders, he knew hardship awaited him. His journey back to Jerusalem was not a leisurely stroll, it was a deliberate march toward suffering, even imprisonment. And yet, not once does he flinch. Why? Because he had already settled in his heart that his life had one purpose: to finish well the race assigned to him by Jesus.

This verse is a powerful recalibration for us in a world obsessed with comfort, status, and personal achievement. Paul wasn’t concerned with how long he would live or how comfortable life would be. His primary concern was completing the task. What was that task? Declaring the good news of God’s grace, a grace that had transformed his life from persecutor to preacher, from destroyer of the church to its most passionate builder.

Think about a marathon runner. They train for months, sometimes years, not just to run, but to finish. Every cramp, every blister, every mile is endurable because of the finish line. Paul lived like that. His eyes were fixed not on the pain of the journey but on the purpose behind it.

There’s a freedom that comes from living this way. When your identity is in Christ and your mission is clear, you don’t panic when plans fall apart or when trials show up. Instead, like Paul, you lean in. You keep running. You share Jesus even when it’s uncomfortable, love even when it’s not returned, and serve even when no one notices, because finishing the task matters more than any applause.

Here are some things you can do today to help you on your journey.

Reflect on what race God has placed before you. Are you running it, or are you distracted?

Identify one way you can share God’s grace this week, with a neighbor, coworker, or family member.

Pray for endurance and clarity. Ask God to renew your purpose and give you strength to press on.

My challenge for you is this:
Live today with eternity in mind. Say yes to what moves you closer to finishing the task Jesus gave you, and say no to what only delays or distracts you.

Lord, like Paul, I want to live with clear purpose. Remind me daily that my life is not about me, but about finishing the race You’ve given me. Strengthen my heart when the journey gets hard. Let my life be a testimony of Your grace. Help me speak boldly and love deeply. May I live for what matters most, pleasing You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
