Keep His Word Close

“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.”
— Deuteronomy 11:18 (NIV)
Moses gave this instruction to Israel as they prepared to enter the Promised Land. He knew that their success and survival would not depend on military power or wealth but on their faithfulness to God’s Word. The command was clear: don’t just hear it……live it.
“Fix these words in your hearts and minds.” The word fix paints the picture of something fastened securely, like a nail driven deep into wood. God wasn’t asking His people to treat His Word as a casual suggestion. He wanted it engraved into their inner being, shaping their thoughts, guiding their decisions, and directing their actions.
To “tie them as symbols on your hands” and “bind them on your foreheads” was a vivid way of saying: let My Word guide what you do and how you think. Even today, observant Jews wear phylacteries, small boxes with Scripture inside, during prayer. But the deeper meaning remains: God desires His Word to be a constant reminder, not just an accessory.
Think of a wedding ring. It isn’t just jewelry, it’s a symbol of a covenant. In the same way, God calls us to wear His Word in our lives as a visible and lived-out covenant. When others look at you, can they see that His Word is guiding your steps?
A story is told of a businessman who carried a small card in his wallet with his life verse written on it. Before making any major decision, he would pull it out, read it, and pray. That simple act kept him aligned with God’s will. Like him, we too need tangible ways to keep Scripture before us, whether it’s a verse taped to the bathroom mirror, a screensaver on our phone, or a passage written in a journal.
Action steps to help on your journey:
Choose one verse this week and commit it to memory.
Place Scripture in places you often look, your desk, car, or fridge.
Before making a decision, pause and ask: Does this line up with God’s Word?
Today’s Challenge:
Carry one Scripture with you today, on a card, in your phone, or written on your hand, and look at it several times. Let it shape your words, actions, and thoughts.
Prayer:
Father, help me to fix Your Word in my heart and mind. Teach me to live it out in what I do and how I think. May Your truth guide my decisions and be evident to others in the way I live. Thank You for the gift of Your Word that brings life and direction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
