When Fear Knocks, Faith Answers

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
— Psalm 56:3 (NIV)
David penned these words during one of the most unsettling times of his life. He was on the run, hunted by Saul, and had just been captured by the Philistines in Gath. Imagine that, Israel’s future king hiding in enemy territory, unsure if he would live to see another sunrise. Fear wasn’t theoretical for David; it was tangible, close enough to feel its breath on his neck. Yet in that terrifying moment, he didn’t deny his fear. He acknowledged it. “When I am afraid…” not if, but when.
What sets David apart is not that he was fearless, it’s that he knew where to turn when fear came. He didn’t let fear dictate his decisions; instead, he turned it into a trigger for trust. Like a child who instinctively reaches for their father’s hand in the dark, David reached for God’s.
Think about your own moments of fear. Those middle-of-the-night worries, uncertain diagnoses, strained relationships, or financial storms. Fear has a way of magnifying our problems and minimizing God’s presence. But this verse reverses that lens. It invites us to focus not on what could go wrong, but on Who holds everything in His hands.
I remember telling one of my girls who was afraid of the dark, “You don’t need to be afraid; Jesus is with you.” That night, we had one heck of a storm, lightning cracked across the sky, rain pelted the windows, yet she stayed in bed and never got up. The next morning I asked how she slept. She said, “when the storm started I thought about what you told me and just said, Jesus, if You’re not too busy, could You hold my hand? And I guess He did because I wasn’t afraid.” You see, that’s what faith looks like, it’s not denying the storm, it’s trusting Who’s in it with you.
Action Steps:
1. Write down what’s been causing you the most fear lately.
2. Next to each fear, write one truth about God’s character, His faithfulness, power, love, or wisdom.
3. Each time fear surfaces today, whisper David’s words: “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”
Today’s Challenge:
Don’t let fear have the final word. Let faith answer instead. Speak God’s promises louder than your anxieties.
Prayer:
Father, when fear creeps into my heart, remind me that You are near. Help me to shift my focus from what I cannot control to the One who controls it all. Teach me to trust You completely, even when I cannot see the outcome. Calm my heart and strengthen my faith today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
