One Way to the Father

“For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.”
– Ephesians 2:18 (NIV)

Paul’s words in this verse are a reminder of the unity and privilege we have in Christ. In the ancient world, access to a king or ruler was limited, reserved only for those with the right status or favor. Common people had little hope of standing in the presence of such authority. But here, Paul declares that through Jesus Christ, both Jews and Gentiles, two groups once deeply divided, are brought together and given access to the greatest King of all: God the Father.

Think about that for a moment. You don’t need a special status, a list of credentials, or years of ritual to draw near to God. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, the veil has been torn. We approach not with fear, but with confidence, because the Spirit Himself ushers us into the Father’s presence.

I shared this story in a sermon once. It’s about a soldier during the Civil War who couldn’t get an audience with President Lincoln. Guards turned him away at every attempt. One day, a little boy noticed his tears, took him by the hand, and said, “Come with me.” That boy was Lincoln’s son, Tad. With him, the soldier walked right past the guards and into the president’s office. That’s what Jesus has done for us. He takes us by the hand and brings us straight to the Father.

Action steps to help on your journey:

Start your prayer time today remembering that you already have access to God through Christ, don’t approach timidly, but with confidence.

Reach out to someone different from you (different background, culture, or belief) and remind yourself that Christ unites us as one.

Journal about what it means for you personally to be able to say, “I have access to the Father.”

Today’s Challenge:
When you feel distant or unworthy, whisper this truth to yourself: “Through Jesus, I have access to my Father.” Let it shape the way you pray and the way you see others.

Prayer:
Father, thank You for the gift of access to Your presence through Jesus Christ. Forgive me for the times I take this privilege lightly or forget it altogether. Fill me with Your Spirit today and remind me that I am welcome before You. Help me to see others as fellow travelers who are also invited into Your presence. May I live as one who has been brought near, and may my life reflect Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
