Walking Humbly with God

09/06/2025

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
— Micah 6:8 (NIV)

Today’s verse is one of the most quoted verses in all of Scripture, and for good reason. It distills the heart of God’s expectations into three simple, yet profound calls: justice, mercy, and humility. The people of Israel had been asking God what kind of offering would please Him, burnt sacrifices, thousands of rams, rivers of oil. But God’s answer cuts through ritual and religious performance: He wants a transformed life that reflects His heart.

Not long ago, in the aftermath of a flood, neighbors in our own community lived out Micah 6:8 without even realizing it. Some acted justly by checking on the most vulnerable, making sure elderly neighbors had food, water, and medicine. Others loved mercy by grilling meals for strangers and opening their homes to families who had lost theirs. And humility was everywhere, in men with chainsaws clearing debris, in women handing out water bottles, in kids carrying trash bags twice their size. Nobody was seeking credit or recognition; they were simply walking humbly with God by loving people in front of them.

To act justly means treating people with fairness, honesty, and dignity. To love mercy means cherishing compassion, seeking opportunities to forgive, and delighting in extending grace. To walk humbly with God means leaning daily on His wisdom, following His lead, and remembering that every good thing in our lives comes from Him.

Action steps to help on your journey:

Look for one opportunity today to act justly, stand up for someone or treat another with fairness.

Show mercy in a practical way, extend forgiveness or kindness, especially when it costs you something.

Begin your day with a prayer of humility, acknowledging your need for God’s direction and strength.

Today’s Challenge:
Choose one of the three, justice, mercy, or humility, and intentionally practice it today. At the end of the day, reflect on how God met you in that choice.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me what is good. Help me to act justly in my words and actions, to love mercy with all my heart, and to walk humbly with You each step of the way. May my life reflect Your character and point others to Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
