“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had.”
- Romans 15:5 (NIV)

When Paul prays this blessing over the church in Rome, he isn’t offering a nice sentiment, he is giving them a survival strategy. The early believers came from different backgrounds, traditions, and expectations. Some were former Jews zealous for the law. Others were Gentiles who had never observed a single feast or dietary command. Their worlds collided, and friction was inevitable.

So Paul prays for endurance and encouragement, two qualities the God of Scripture pours out in abundance. Endurance helps us stay in the relationship when emotions say, “I’m done.” Encouragement lifts our hearts so we can see each other through the eyes of grace instead of frustration.

But then Paul asks for something deeper: “the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had.”
That’s a game-changer.

Think about how Jesus interacted with people who misunderstood Him, doubted Him, or even opposed Him. He remained patient. He stayed present. He continued to speak truth, but always with a heart to restore, not to win an argument. He moved toward messy people, not away from them. He carried the weight of others’ weakness rather than demanding they rise to His strength.

This is the attitude Paul longs for in the church, and it is still the attitude Jesus longs to form in us.

Imagine what would shift in our homes if we carried Christ’s mindset into our conversations. Imagine what would heal in our churches if we chose endurance over irritation and encouragement over criticism. Imagine what could happen in our friendships, workplaces, and communities if we saw one another not as obstacles but as brothers and sisters worth bearing with.

The God who calls us to this unity is the same God who empowers it. He never asks you to produce what He Himself is willing to provide.

Action Steps:
• Identify one relationship where you need Christ-like endurance. Pray specifically for that person today.
• Speak one word of encouragement to someone who might least expect it.
• Pause before your next disagreement and ask, “What would Christ’s mindset look like in this moment?”

Today’s Challenge:
Choose one interaction today, just one, and intentionally approach it with the mindset of Christ. Let His patience, humility, and grace shape your tone, your posture, and your words.

Prayer:
Father, You are the God who gives endurance and encouragement. Shape my heart to look more like Jesus. Give me His mindset toward those around me—patience where I am quick to tire, grace where I am tempted to judge, and love where I am slow to understand. Let unity begin with my attitude today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
