The Lord Directs Our Steps

11/05/2025

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
- Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)

We live in a world obsessed with planning. From calendars and five-year goals to daily to-do lists, most of us just love to chart our course. It’s like we have to know exactly where we’re headed. Now, don’t get me wrong, there is wisdom in that. We know that God Himself values stewardship and order. But today’s scripture reminds us that even our best-laid plans are subject to the divine direction of a loving God who sees the whole picture.

Have you ever taught a baby to walk or maybe watched someone else doing it? You stand a few feet away, arms outstretched, ready to catch or redirect as needed. As the baby moves forward, sometimes wobbly, sometimes off course, what happens? You lovingly adjust their steps leading them to safety and growth. That’s exactly what God does with us. We take steps based on what we see, but He establishes where those steps will ultimately land.

It’s what He did for Joseph. His plans certainly didn’t include betrayal by his brothers, slavery, or prison. Yet, through each unexpected turn, God was aligning his steps toward purpose. He was called to save many lives. We could say the same about Paul. His missionary plans seemed to always be rerouted by the Spirit. And because of this the results had a greater impact than he could have imagined.

There are many times our plans change leaving us we frustrated or confused. Instead we should remember that detours in our journey are not delays in God’s plan, they’re just redirections. Sometimes He closes one door to guide us to a better one. The key is trusting His hand even when we can’t see His map.

Action Steps:
1. Write down your top three plans or goals for the coming season.
2. Pray over each one, surrendering them to God’s direction.
3. Ask God to reveal whether you’re walking His path or merely your own.
4. Take one small obedient step today, even if the full plan isn’t clear.

Today’s Challenge:
Pause before making your next big decision. Ask yourself, “Have I invited God into this plan?” Then listen quietly for His direction.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for guiding my steps even when I don’t understand the path. Help me to trust Your timing, Your wisdom, and Your ways. Align my plans with Your purpose, and teach me to walk in step with You each day. Amen.
