The Real Battle

07/22/225

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
- Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)

Have you ever found yourself in conflict with someone, maybe at work, at home, or even at church, and walked away thinking, “Why did that escalate so fast?” Sometimes the person in front of us isn’t the true opponent. Scripture reminds us that the battle isn’t primarily physical or personal. It’s spiritual.

Paul pulls back the curtain in this verse, revealing a dimension most people overlook: we are in the midst of a spiritual war. The enemy we face is cunning, strategic, and invisible. Satan and his forces don’t show up with pitchforks and horns, they attack through lies, division, discouragement, temptation, and confusion.

Think of it like a puppet show. What we see, the hurtful words, the broken relationships, the anxiety and fear, are often just the surface. Behind the curtain, there’s a real enemy pulling strings, trying to distort truth, sabotage peace, and keep us from living in the power and freedom Christ offers.

During WWII, there was a strategy called “Operation Bodyguard,” where the Allies used fake armies, radio signals, and dummy tanks to deceive the Nazis about where they would invade. The Germans were ready for a battle in one place, but the real attack came somewhere else. That’s exactly how Satan works. He gets us fighting each other, arguing over lesser things, distracted from what matters most—so we never see the true attack coming.

But here’s the good news: we’re not left defenseless. Ephesians 6 goes on to tell us about the armor of God. Truth. Righteousness. The gospel of peace. Faith. Salvation. The Word of God. Prayer. We are fully equipped when we suit up daily in God’s strength.

Here are some things to help you on your journey.

Start your day with prayer, asking God to make you aware of the spiritual nature of your battles.

Before reacting in conflict, pause and ask, “Who is the real enemy here?”

Read Ephesians 6:13–18 and choose one piece of the armor of God to focus on this week.

Encourage a friend or family member today—don’t let the enemy sow division.

My challenge for you is this:
Pay attention to any conflict or tension you face today and respond not with fleshly reactions, but with spiritual insight. Remember who your real enemy is, and respond with grace, prayer, and truth.

Father, open my eyes to the unseen battle. Help me not to wrestle with people, but to recognize when the enemy is working behind the scenes. Strengthen me with Your Spirit. Teach me to put on the full armor of God and to walk in truth, faith, and peace. Let me be a light in the darkness and a warrior in Your name. In Jesus’ powerful name, Amen.
