Present Pain, Future Glory

07/20/2025

“I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”
—Romans 8:18 (NIV)

Paul’s words to the church in Rome are like a lighthouse in a storm, steady, piercing the fog of our current trials with the hope of what’s coming. These are not light or dismissive words. Paul knew suffering. He had been shipwrecked, beaten, imprisoned, betrayed, and left for dead. Yet here, from the depths of that experience, he says: it’s not even a comparison. The glory to come outweighs it all.

Think about carrying a heavy backpack up a steep mountain trail. The weight is real. The climb is grueling. But once you reach the summit and look out over the breathtaking view, sunlight dancing on snow capped peaks, valleys rich with color, it all seems worth it. That’s what Paul is saying. The struggle is real. The pain is valid. But the glory? Oh, the glory that God is preparing for us, it’s beyond anything we can imagine. Not just around us, but in us.

This verse isn’t about pretending life doesn’t hurt. It’s about knowing that the hurt isn’t the end of the story. It’s about keeping our eyes lifted, even as our feet are bruised. For those in Christ, every ounce of suffering is temporary, but every ounce of glory is eternal.

When we face sickness, loss, disappointment, or uncertainty, we are invited to frame it all within God’s eternal perspective. Today’s hardship is producing something eternal in us, character, hope, endurance, and ultimately, a share in Christ’s glory. Our lives are part of a much larger, much more beautiful story.

Here are some things to help you on your journey.

Write down one area of suffering or struggle you’re currently facing.

Ask God to show you how He’s using that challenge to shape something eternal in you.

Encourage someone else today who’s walking through difficulty—remind them gently of Romans 8:18.

Memorize this verse and meditate on it whenever discouragement creeps in.

My challenge for you is this:
Live today with heaven’s perspective. Let the weight of future glory lighten the load of present struggles. Don’t minimize your pain, but magnify God’s promise.

Father, thank You that my suffering is not the final word. Help me to see my trials through the lens of eternity. Strengthen me with the hope of the glory You are preparing in me. May I not lose heart, but trust that You are working even in the midst of the hard. Fill me with endurance, peace, and joy as I wait for all You have promised. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
