Blessed in the Battle

“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
—Matthew 5:10 (NIV)
Following Jesus will eventually bring you to a crossroads with the world. Today’s verse reminds us that living righteously in an unrighteous world won’t always lead to applause, it may actually lead to persecution. Yet, Jesus calls those who endure it blessed.
Think about the early church. After Jesus’ resurrection, His followers boldly preached the gospel in the streets of Jerusalem. Many were arrested, beaten, or even killed for their message. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was stoned to death while forgiving his attackers and looking up to see the heavens opened. What gave him the courage to stand firm? He understood what Jesus meant, he was living for a greater kingdom.
Even today, believers around the world face persecution that we may never personally experience, imprisonment, torture, or even death. But persecution also takes quieter forms: being mocked at school, passed over at work, or excluded from relationships because of your stand for truth. It may not seem like much to others, but Jesus sees it all. And He blesses you for it.
The blessing isn’t found in the suffering itself, but in the reason for it. “Because of righteousness.” Not because we were obnoxious or unkind in our faith, but because we lived like Jesus. It’s about standing up for what’s right, speaking truth in love, and holding to Kingdom values even when it costs us.
This verse reminds us that persecution is not a sign of God’s absence, it’s evidence of our alignment with Christ. And our reward? “The kingdom of heaven.” That’s not just a future hope, it’s a present reality. God draws near to the persecuted. He sustains them. He honors their faith. And He uses their witness to change the world.
Here are some things you can do to help you on your journey.
Reflect on times when you’ve felt resistance because of your faith. What was the cause? Was it for righteousness’ sake?
Pray for the persecuted church around the world. Consider reading stories from ministries like Voice of the Martyrs.
Examine how you’re living out your faith publicly. Are you willing to stand firm when it’s uncomfortable?
Encourage someone today who is facing pushback for doing what is right.
My challenge for you is this:
Choose one area of your life, work, school, home, where you will intentionally take a stand for righteousness today, even if it costs you. Be kind, be wise, but be bold.
Father, thank You for calling me blessed even when the world rejects me. Help me to live righteously, not for approval but for Your glory. Strengthen those around the world who suffer greatly for their faith, fill them with courage and peace. Give me that same courage in my own battles, that I may reflect Jesus in all I do. Let Your Kingdom be seen in me today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
