Pure Vision, Pure Heart

06/28/2025

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
– Matthew 5:8 (NIV)

There’s something beautiful about watching a child gaze in wonder at the world, eyes wide, heart unburdened. They see beauty in mud puddles, treasure in dandelions, and adventure in every backyard. That kind of purity that is unfiltered, undistracted, and unguarded, that is what Jesus is talking about here. It’s not just moral cleanliness or innocence. It’s about having a heart that’s undivided, focused wholly on God.

In Jesus’ time, the heart was seen as the center of one’s being, it was not just emotions, but also thoughts, will, and desires. To be “pure in heart” means to be single-minded in our devotion to God. It’s to long for Him more than for status, success, or even comfort. David prayed, “Give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name” (Psalm 86:11). That’s the kind of heart Jesus blesses.

But purity doesn’t come from gritting our teeth or trying harder. It flows from being with Jesus, letting Him clean out the corners of our lives and reorder our loves. It’s not about perfection but direction. When our hearts are aimed at Him, we begin to see differently. We see God in creation, in suffering, in Scripture, in people we’d otherwise overlook. And one day, we will see Him face to face.

Think of a foggy window. You can’t see clearly until it’s wiped clean. When our hearts are cluttered with compromise or sin, our vision of God gets blurred. But when He purifies our hearts, our spiritual eyesight sharpens. We don’t just know about Him…..we see Him. We recognize His fingerprints all over our lives.

Here are some things you can do to help you on your journey.

Pray Psalm 139:23–24 and ask God to search your heart.

Let go of one distraction or idol, even if just for today, that may be clouding your focus on God.

Ask God to help you see Him in one ordinary moment today: in nature, in a conversation, or in your quiet time.

My challenge for you is this:
Guard your heart today. Don’t let bitterness, envy, or fear take root. Choose purity in thought and motive, and watch how God reveals Himself in unexpected ways.

Lord, I long to see You more clearly. Cleanse my heart from anything that divides my attention or dilutes my devotion. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Let me live today with eyes open to Your presence, and a heart fully surrendered to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
